The St. Charles Streetcar is the best way to see the Garden District, Uptown and the Riverbend area. It's cheap $1.25 one way, and if you're over 65, it's 25 cents. The drivers are courteous too. Get a one day pass ($3 or $5) and get off on Washington and tour the Garden District. After Louisiana, stop at the Columns Hotel and have a mint julep.
Really slow but gets you where you need to go in terms of tourist attractions.
Also pretty loud and bumpy.
I picked up the street car on Lee Circle and took it to the end along St Charles Ave. It once went all the way to the zoo, but stops due to construction, so you have to walk the final way, or get a bus.
You must have at least one ride on the streetcars - wonderful way to see the city.
$3 day pass - what an absolute bargain........you can jump on and off all day long for that price and on all the different routes - fantastic value
We used the St Charles Avenue, Canal Street and Riverside streetcars to get around New Orleans and what a bargain - $3 for a day pass and you can just jump on and jump off. No long waits and great views of the city.
Definitely recommend using this form of transport whilst visiting - BARGAIN.
What a great way to get a feel of the locals and every day to day of a city.
At $1.50 a trip it can't be beat. There is an all day ticket but we did not find that out until after we took the ride our first time. Exact change is required when entering the trolley so be prepared.
The streetcars run every 15 minutes on the main street and is a great way to see the an overview o the business area of the Garden District. The drivers are tell you where to get off if you ask them when getting on.
When they get to the end of the line everyone must get off and the driver moves to the other end, flipping the seats on there way, then the rear becomes the front as there are two driver areas one on each end.
All in all a greay flavour of the real New Orleans!
