Our overnite stay at the Westmark Inn, Skagway occured in June of 2002, and was set up by the Alaska Cruise Lines Liason office at Skagway Port, after we missed our boat's departure to Juneau. We were aboard the Princess Lines cruise ship, which made a 14 hr port call to the tourist trap of a town called Skagway (no other good reason for it). Instead of wasting our time in Skagway, we drove to White Horse, Canada and unfortunately failed to make the right turn upon returning and was 45 minutes late for the Princess's departure. We checked into the Westmark around 9:00 PM and were given two tiny separate rooms which were far apart from each other for my family of 4. We asked about room service but they had none. The only thing open at the Westmark, serving some kind of food at that hour was the Bonanza Bar.The Bonanza Bar was a dive also (what do you expect), serving up to most of the transients who work the summers at Skagway. I ordered a pizza and some crab for takeout, which was horribly overpriced and lousy by anyone's cooking standards (I am from Hawaii and know what high prices are). When I got back to my room I discovered the bar overcharged me for three beers instead of only the two that I had while waiting for my food to be prepared. I wrote a complaint of the overcharging to the bar manager the next morning but he never got back to me.While attempting to take a shower, I found that the mixer valve on the shower was defective and produced only hot water. When I called to inform the front office of the problem at around 11:00 PM, they had no one available to fix the problem nor would they give me another room.Upon checkout, I complained about the shower problem again. However the clerk at that shift knew nothing about my earlier complaint and charged me the full rate for the 2 rooms @ $245.00 without offering any kind of apology for the poor accomodations. We were at the Westmark for less than 12 hrs, had lousy accomodations, lousy food and service, and was soaked for it at the end.Humiliated by the experience, I mailed the Westmark, Skagway a letter detailing the worst accomodations I've ever experienced. I have yet to recieve a response of any kind from them.Skagway is a town that exists only for the cruise industry and there is very little competition in all areas of its commerce. Beware of that and don't get taken by the local establishments who use that advantage against you.
