Being gite owners in France ourselves, we weren’t able to go away during the summer so we decided to book a break in Marseillan this October.
We booked 3 nights in the apartment B5 which has a fabulous roof terrace with balustrade and spectacular views out over the Etang de Thau, the harbour and Mediterranean. There were 2 bedrooms, a double and a twin. We went as a couple with 2 teenage boys.
The great thing about Port Rive Gauche is that is that although it is self catering they also offer breakfast (which is extra). The fridge was fully stocked with beers, wine and soft drinks which are charged for (if used) but we bought our own food and drinks. The apartment was fairly minimalist, which isn’t really my taste, but with so many apartments, a good idea to keep things fairly simple, but it worked. The little fish shaped dishes and ornaments around the apartment were very in keeping with the style of the rooms as were the carefully chosen colours on the walls and wooden furniture which added a certain warmth to the apartment.
We found the website for Port Rive Gauche not as user friendly as it could have been and believe it rather under-sells itself. A little more clarity on the layout of the apartments available would be good. I am not sure why, but I was under the impression that both bedrooms were ensuite, but this wasn’t a problem really, just had we known would have brought dressing gowns with us to go to the bathroom with. With all the added lovely Occitane accessories and fluffy towels, perhaps the offer of complimentary use of dressing gowns during a client’s stay would have been nice. It was an added luxury to have free Wifi (great for us to keep in touch with our business and for the boys), Ipod docking station, plus the cable Tv and telephone. The raised double bed was fine for us, but I think that had I been elderly and needing to use the loo during the night it might have been a problem. However, the bedroom was beautifully romantic and well thought out other than that. We had a wardrobe and chest of drawers in our room, but the twin room only had a trunk to put clothes in, which slightly lets it down.
The furniture was lovely and the terrace outside was a great place to catch the spectacular sunrise, aperos before lunch and afternoons sipping local Aude wine overlooking the Etang - fabulous. The location of the property is brilliant, not only for the view, but because it is only a minutes walk from the lovely little restaurants at the Port of Marseillan with fantastic fresh locally caught seafood and local wine.
The private car parking is great if you have a small car, but for us travelling in a 4x4, parking was a problem in the garage. Fortunately, October is not a busy time of year, so there was ample parking outside the building and the area is very safe. We didn’t feel this was an issue so didn’t discuss it, but had it been during the high season, finding a parking place may have been a problem.
The ladies on Reception were absolutely charming and nothing was too much trouble.
We had a brilliant 3 day break, and would certainly recommend Port Rive Gauche. Thank you for a great stay, oh and I forgot, the fantastic massage in Port Rive’s own Spa room. What a tonic! We hope to return next year at some point.
