I stayed here while on a business trip for about 6 weeks, so I feel that I was able to get to know this place fairly well. It is a fairly large hotel- about 130 rooms on 3 floors- and does allow pets for an extra fee. Although it purports itself to be an extended stay hotel, it really seemed to cater more to short-term visitors. It is a no-frills place, to be sure- do not expect any luxury amenities. However, the cost of the rooms is much less than the cost of the average hotel room in Anchorage- which is a huge plus if you are on a budget.
Pro's: Fairly low room rate, especially if you book the room in advance and are staying long-term; centrally located in midtown, with easy access to Seward Highway to travel north or south; free parking; walking distance to a number of restuarants, including the Moose's Tooth Pub and Pizzeria, McDonald's, Nino's Italian Eatery, Chicago Pizza, Modern Dwellers Chocolate Lounge, Kinley's Restuarant, Yamato Ya and New Sagaya's Midtown Market; Wal-Mart, Fred Meyer, Sears, Barnes and Noble, Carr's, Qdoba Mexican Grill, and Subway are examples of other stores and restuarants that are a short drive away; the rooms themselves are of a decent size, with a small microwave, 2-burner stovetop and a small, but adequate refrigerator; there is a small business center in a separate room on the first floor, which consists of an older computer and printer; smoking rooms are set aside on the third floor- which is nice for the non-smokers; the bathrooms are nicely sized, with a standard tub and sink and plenty of towels; there is a small, adequate fitness center on the first floor; beautiful hanging baskets were at the entrance to the lobby- a nice touch for an otherwise spartan hotel.
Cons's: The hotel doesn not encourage any sort of guest interaction, which I think is unusual for an extended stay hotel (the lobby seats a maxium of three guests); cleanliness is a huge issue here- the carpet (especially on the first floor) is very worn and stained; the laundry room appeared as though it had never been cleaned (although the garbage had been emptied) each time I used it; the quality of the housekeeping was inconsistent- at time, my room was absolutely immaculate and at other times the basics (such as scrubbing the toilet and changing the bed sheets had not been done; many guests brought their dogs, which made for occasional burst of loud barking; as with any hotel, there was occasional loud hall noise, which varied with the age/maturity and sobriety level of the guests; "dingy" is the word that best describes the hotel's interior appearance- the furniture, paint, and carpet are all worn and are in desperate need of replacement; the staff are not knowledgeable or helpful when it comes to asking advice about sightseeing and such- at the very most (and some did not even go this far), they point you to a rack of tourist brochures in the foyer.
My overall impression of this hotel is that the owner(s) do not wish to invest any money at all in upgrading the interior, and that it barely meets(if that) the national standards for an Extended Stay Deluxe hotel.
I would recommend this hotel only if cost is the overriding consideration in choosing a place to stay. If you can spare the cash, there are nicer places in the midtown area to rest your head at night.
