A family holiday in Crete for 2 weeks and following previous reviews of the Sissi resort and the Alexandros hotel we made this our choice and we were not disappointed.
The hotel is small and typically greek, family run and provided us with the perfect base to explore Crete.
The rooms are basic but clean, TV, Kettle, hairdryer and fridge. (No cooking facilities). The maid visited daiy and always put in a little extra - like fold the kids PJ's or arrange their toys for them - nice touch!
Air conditioning is extra at 7 euro a night and safety deposit box was 15 euro a week.
The hotel has free internet Wi-fi access - ask them for the password. Coverage is limited to near the bar and pool area.
The hotel has a gym that is free to use for Guests - mainly weight machines, but good all the same.
There are no laundry facilities at the hotel. Wash your own clothes in the shower or pay someone local.
The swimming pool was cleaned regularly and provided a home from home for the kids to splash around in, plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas for guest use.
The hotel is situated on the very west edge of Sissi (last hotel before you leave the resort).
Our board was bed and breakfast - the breakfast is lovely continental buffet, same every day with a choice of fresh bread, cereal, cheese, ham, greek yoghurt, honey, jam, tomatoes, boiled eggs, fruit, coffee etc. The usual cheeky set of guests would take a load of extra breakfast for their lunch later - you know who you are! ^^
The next portion of the review is not about the hotel but more it's location and the resort of Sissi.
The sea is close (5-10 mins walk) but it's all lava rock and for the two weeks we were there was too rough to swim in or actually get down too - the constant breeze keeps it rough - you have to walk down to Sissi harbour if you want to swim / snorkel with some shelter from the rough sea. Many of the locals gather here - no sandy beach though.
If you want sand you have to walk quite a distance to nearby bufos beach to the East (20-30mins) - which again is open to the elements and the sea remains rough, or you can walk the road out of Sissi (west) for about 20-30 mins to a sandy beach.
Sissi, or rather Crete is very expensive right now. A meal for 4 in a local taverna with a drink each, your looking at 40-50 euro's. We tried a few and have to say the Alexandros itself offers some of the best taverna / restaurant food in Sissi. If you like beer - 3.50 euro for 0.5L though. 2 Supermarkets very close by - we lived out of these for the majority of our stay, but again expensive. Look where the locals eat if you want better rates, cafe bar opposite knossoss supermarket worked out well for us in the end.
Sissi has one bus daily around 9:00am which returns around 3:30pm - your best bet to break out of Sissi is by hire car - plenty of hire centres in Sissi and reviews can be found easily in the trip advisor forums - we used Smile - full CDW, unlimited milage - 170 euro for 4 days with a new VW Polo. Read about Cretan driving if you haven't done it before.
Crete is a beautiful place - get out there to experience it!
