“Good Place, but fix the Thermostats”

My wife and I spent Memorial Day here.. Good Points - great bed but we do not fit well in a Queen. Good Breakfast. Great choice of food to eat.

Only Bad Points -- Thermastat in room always went to 85 and would not stay at temperature we wanted. Called desk first night, said they were programmed that way and was nothing could be done about it. Even joked that one room woke up all sweaty and could not dry out. We sweated and had to get out of bed every couple of hours to keep the room cool. Wish There was something htey ould do about it, but none offered any solutions

As the Managing Owner of the State House Inn I regularly read the reviews and respond to them when necessary.

Our Thermostats are designed to save energy. Starting at 9am (after most guests leave for the day) our thermostats automatically reset. In the summer they go to 78 (not 85) and in the winter they go to 50. This reset function happens 4 times during the day, the last one at 5pm.

I've stayed in my room during the day and, quite frankly, it can be disconcerting when you discover that the room is either warming up or cooling down. One simply has to go to the thermostat and touch any button and it jumps back to it's prior programmed setpoint.

In this age of uncertainty about oil and pollution, it is important to think about the environment. Instead of having the air conditioning or heating blasting all day when our guests are long gone, this system is the most foolproof one we could find on the market.

I apologize for the inconvenience for those guests that stay in their room during the day but most people quickly figure out that they simply need to touch any button and they are back in business.

Our planet (and our electric bill) appreciates this effort.

The State House Inn is home away from home for me. From checking in with Pat at the front desk, to falling asleep in comfortable down-filled duvets and pillows, this smart, efficient George Jetson decor hotel is comfortable solace after a hectic day at the Capital just one block away. Staff is friendly, rooms are clean, and your stay comes with a complementary breakfast (including scrambled eggs and bacon, as well as fresh fruit) and convenient and free parking. Many sites and restaurants are within walking distance, including the Abraham Lincoln Museum and quaint downtown shopping. A business center is open 24/7 for the business traveler.

“Great Hotel!”

This is a great hotel right in the center in Springfield! I stayed here for three weeks straight while in town on business (and am booked for another 3 weeks later this year). Less than 2 blocks from everything in the heart of Springfield (Capitol, Supreme Court, State Library). The hotel has been completely remodeled to look like it did back in the 60's and they did a great job! Would recommend this place to anyone!

“Great Rooms, Fun Decor, Good Service!”

I stayed at the State House Inn on April 22, 2008, along with four colleagues from work (we each had separate rooms, which were mini-suites).

This is one of the most interesting places I have stayed in my travels over the years. The hotel was built in 1961 and has been given a history theme of sorts-- especially on the inside, where the furnishings in the rooms and lobby are 1960s retro-chic.

The service at the hotel was fine-- not up to Hyatt or Hilton standards, but good. For instance, check in wasn't speedy, but then again, Springfield, Illinois, isn't exactly New York City-- things are more laid-back in the Midwest!

The rooms were very clean. The bathroom was equipped with thick towels and a decent selection of soaps and shampoos.

The bar/lounge in the hotel was not exactly a hotspot of nightlife. However, the selection was good, the bartender was friendly and the decor was also cool cat 1960s-style.

The breakfast buffet the next morning was very good and gets a big thumbs up from me.

Kudos to the creative owners of this hotel who embraced this establishment's history. By doing so, they created a very fun place to stay!

If you are in Springfield (home of Abraham Lincoln's homeplace and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum-- both worth seeing while there), give the State House Inn a try.

“A fine Budget Hotel, at a Premium price”

The other reviews are highly misleading. The hotel room was very small (just room for the beds, space between beds and desk was too small for one person to pass unless chair tucked in, people
had to walk one at a time). The finishing and bathroom were of a clean well done BUDGET hotel.

The price (for Springfield) was premium.
This is a fine BUDGET hotel but at a PREMIUM price (for the area).

As the Managing Owner of The State House Inn, I regularly review the Trip Advisor reviews. When we find a review that suggests we have provided unsatisfactory service, we make every attempt to rectify the problem AND to contact the guest to see if we can make amends. When you deal with tens of thousands of people every year, you are bound to make a mistake once in a while. We vigorously pursue these issues.

The average price for a hotel room in the United States is now over $100/night. This includes all of the Mom & Pop hotels in the middle of nowhere that don't have a fraction of the operating costs we have. Depending on our occupancy, we often charge less than $100/night and the State of Illinois will ONLY pay us $70/night for the rooms they occupy. Occasionally, if we are approaching 100% occupancy, our rates will rise above $100 BUT if you tried to get a room at any other hotel in Springfield, you would find that some of them were charging up to $179 on the same night. We are forced by the State of Illinois to maximize our returns from our private sector clients because they steadfastly refuse to raise the State Rate. Since we do not have a substitute for State Business, we are forced to sell up to 30% of our total room nights at a rate that is below our cost to operate.

I find it ironic that a guest from Chicago would complain about the rates. Our hotel, even if located out by O'Hare Airport, could easily command $159/night and we would still be a bargain. Our operating costs in Springfield are comparable to this area including property and bed taxes so our rates are not only consistent with the market, they are good value.

Not everybody can appreciate that we renovated the hotel and used a 1960's theme both inside and out. Not everybody knows that we are the youngest building to ever be Historically Landmarked in the City of Springfield. Not everybody can appreciate that the size of the rooms was determined in 1960 when people slept in smaller beds. What they do appreciate however is that we provide the same amenities as a four star hotel at 3 star rates.

I am sorry that this guest felt that we were over-charging. That disturbs me given that we struggle in the Springfield market. Perhaps if they had stayed at one of the other Mid-Rise or High Rise hotels in town, paid $30 to $50 more per night and had bread & water for breakfast instead of the massive hot breakfast that we supply, they would understand that we truly are a bargain hotel.
