I just returned from an overnight trip to Cambridge, where I lived for 4 years in the early 80s. Like most people whose memories of Harvard Square date from before the upscale invasion that began with the construction of the Charles Hotel, I find so many of the venerable old places gone and the funky old feel of the area diminished. My night at the Irving House was a little return to the Harvard Square of my memories.
It is a great European-style hotel, with a friendly desk staff, rooms that are not all the same, welcoming public spaces, and just a wonderful overall feeling. The location is perfect, a 5-minute walk from Memorial Hall, 10 minutes from the heart of Harvard Square. It's also very near the Sackler, Fogg, and other museums, and guests are allowed to use member passes to get into the museums free.
Breakfast was a simple continental buffet - nothing spectacular but more than adequate. Some reviews have complained about the thin walls, but I did not find this to be a problem. My room was small but definitely adequate, and everything was immaculately cleaned.
In this era of homogenization and standardization, I really appreciated the individuality and low-key charm of the Irving House.
