I stayed at the Harvard Square Hotel for a few days this month, and although I agree with other reviewers that the location is good, everything else is sub-par at best. The worst was the noise level -- because the rooms are situated along a dorm-like hallway, you hear every sound that anyone makes as they are walking by your door. (Oddly, noise from the outside was not a problem even though there is quite a bit of traffic.) By the end of my three night stay I was exhausted from lack of sleep. (For those who are interested: I stayed in room 210.)
Second to the noise was the service, which was the worst I have experienced in the six years that I have been travelling extensively on business. Although the staff were very pleasant, the hotel's policies are very restrictive and do not keep in mind the spirit of what great service really means -- such as allowing a slightly later than normal check-out time if availability permits (they were going to charge me $25 for checking out at 12:30 instead of Noon!), and allowing guests an extra hour or two of parking after check out (I would have been charged another whole day's rate if I had left the car in the lot while going to brunch).
Perhaps if the room rate were $150/night or less I could recommend this hotel to heavy sleepers (very heavy sleepers!) who simply want a place to "crash" while visiting Cambridge; however, at $239/night (plus $30/day overnight parking, plus Internet fees, etc.) I cannot recommend this hotel under any circumstances, and will not be returning.
