“Fabulous hotel and sporting facilities but need a new chef”

My wife and I stayed here over the weekend and found the hotel and its facilities to be first class - the golf courses are the central attraction and they are immaculate, including the 9 hole course which could so easily have been an unloved afterthought.

Our suite was large, very comfortable and had a wonderful terrace and garden. The staff were highly efficient and friendly (but could have been more discreet - reading out our bill line by line as we checked out in front of other guests is not great)

The crushing disappointment for us was the food in the Manor restaurant. Again, the surroundings were beautiful, good ambience and the staff were (generally) excellent. However the food was without exception overcooked and often tasteless - there seems to be little regard for sourcing quality ingredients and limited ambition to create an interesting menu. A real disappointment, particularly given the prices charged.

This could be a five star hotel/resort/club, but only with a new chef.

“Great for a sporty weekend just outside of London”

We stayed at Foxhills over the Bank Holiday weekend on a golf package, and enjoyed ourselves enormously.

We particularly enjoyed the breakfast which was the best hotel breakfast I have ever had. We also had lovely meals at the formal Manor restaurant and the more relaxed Summerhouse Brasserie.

The service was exceptional. Every member of staff was eager to help and dealt with our requests very quickly. They were happy to process requests relating to other departments, such as golfing tuition, rather than sending us across to deal with it ourselves.

Admittedly, our room was not particularly stylish, but it was fairly large with acres of storage space and the bathroom was great. We looked out onto tennis courts and our front door opened up onto a courtyard swimming pool for the hotel guests (as opposed to the sports club members). That swimming pool is one of three: there is another large outdoor pool and a further indoor pool as part of the gym.

As hotel guests we had access to many of the Foxhills facilities: including the swimming pools, the tennis courts, the gym (including squash courts) the driving range and the 9 hole golf course. All this is set in picturesque grounds.

It only took us half an hour to get there from SW London, which made it a very easy weekend away, and I would definitely repeat it.

The only downsides were that at breakfast you were not given your own coffee/tea pot, so you had to repeatedly summon the waitress (they came pretty quickly, to be fair) and our friends suffered from a noisy neighbour one night, so the soundproofing may not be that great.

We have just got back from a weekend at Foxhills. And what a fab weekend we had. My husband and I took my mother who is not as agile as she used to be, and therefore I requested an easy access room. We were given two ground floor rooms in the new block. Our rooms were fantastic. Absolutely enormous with beautiful (and again enormous) bathrooms - with Molton Brown products - always a nice touch - and lovely fluffy white robes and fluffy white towels. Separate dark green towels are provided for the pool and gym - so no need to take your own. Patio doors led out on to the par 3 course which, according to my husband, was a very nice little course. More about the room - huge kingsize comfy bed and a 42 inch plasma tv with DVD player !!!

We were extremely lucky with the weather which allowed us full use of all the facilities - tennis, the two outdoor pools (but there is an indoor one if you aren't so lucky with the sunshine), a well-equipped gym, and exercise classes should you need to work off some of the lovely food.

Turning to the restaurant, we booked in at the Manor restaurant - and this is why I have only given the overall grade a 4 stars - the restaurant itself is lovely and the waiting staff extremely helpful - especially Paulo - who made our evening. Unfortunately our table was right next to a couple who decided to bring their baby (18 months) with them who was miserable and crying throughout most of the meal. There is another less formal restaurant at the hotel - The Summerhouse Brasserie - which I would have thought was much more condusive to taking a small baby/child to (and less irritating for other dinner guests). Maybe this is something the hotel should think about for the future - only adults in the Manor House Restaurant. This may also be something the hotel may wish to consider for the smaller outdoor pool - although this was much quieter than the main outdoor pool - it would be a nice touch if this was made adults only. These were the only two gripes. After dinner we had coffee in the lounge and were lucky enough to see a fab firework display which was being put on by a wedding party in the hotel. A lovely bonus.

Breakfast is served until 10.00am and my husband's haddock with poached eggs that he ordered was devine, as well as my kippers. Check out was for 11.00am, but because the weather was glorious we asked if there was any possibility of a later check out. Reception staff said this would not be a problem at all and allowed us to keep one of our two rooms on for the rest of the day - without any further charge.

All the staff were great - especially Portugeuse Paulo !!

I have already made enquiries to go back next month for my husband's birthday. Can't wait!!!
