I was a little nervous given some of the bad reviews but stayed here for business for 3 nights at the end of May. The location was great, right off of the 101. Had a view of Mt. Tamalpais and the water. Could open my balcony door and enjoy the breeze.

The room was comfortable - nice bed, linen, work desk. Wireless internet was great and complimentary. Bathroom was small with a light/fan combination or a light on a timer - both poor choices in attempts to be environmentally friendly.

Contiental breakfast was standard HI fare. No hotel restaurant but Fratonoio's (Italian) next door was fantastic.

“They allow dogs but do not have ear plugs at the front desk”

I stayed at the hotel four nights; two of those nights I had to complain to the front desk about barking dogs in a room two doors down from mine (I was in room 134). Overall I spoke with five different people at the front desk. One did not know that dogs were allowed in the hotel and offered to come down to my room to listen. Two of them (including the general manager) told me that the hotel sets aside two or three rooms for dogs, but that these rooms were on the opposite side of the hall and seven rooms away. The fourth person I spoke with, during check-out, only apologized for the inconvenience I may have experienced. The fifth person apologized, then verified that there was a dog in the room two away from mine (the dog was in room 138) and then asked my why the general manager didn’t move me to a different room further away from the dogs (an offer I would have gladly accepted).

I found it odd that a hotel which allows dogs does not provide earplugs to guests that are inconvenienced; however, I am rather upset by the fact that the general manager lied to me about where the animals were located.

Regarding the security of the hotel, I was wondering why the security door had its latch taped over, allowing anyone to enter the hotel without a key.

Also, the housekeeping carts were stored in the hallway throughout my entire stay.

On the positive side, the property is a very short car ride to the Golden Gate Bridge and SF in general. The breakfast bar was very good, even having some low sugar items available.

After reading some of the poor reviews on this hotel, we were a little worried about what our experience there would be like. However, we are very pleased with our stay. The room was clean and the bed comfortable. The crib we used for our baby was in good condition, and the staff was friendly and helpful. There is a neat Italian restaurant on the property, and there are some great views of the adjacent bird sanctuary. We never got a chance to go on the nature walk that goes past the hotel, though we saw lots of people walking and biking on it. The hotel is on the same exit you would take to go to Muir Woods and Stinson Beach, both very cool to see. Dress warm if you're going to Muir Woods (it's damp and cool in the deep glens).

I stayed here just 1 night for business. The check-in went really quickly and I got to choose if I wanted a room on the 1st or 2nd floor. The room was clean and spacious.

The only area for improvement that I saw was that the bathroom floor could use a good scrubbing... it wasn't that the tiled floor hadnt been swept or mopped, but it was stained.

If you want to be close to the Golden Gate and Sausalito but not have to pay $200/night, the Holiday Inn Express is a great choice. I would stay here again if I were in the area.

“Overall Good”

Holiday Inn Express Mill Valley / Sausalito

9 Jan 2007

We stayed in the hotel right before Christmas and requested a two bed non-smoking room on an upper floor. We received a non-smoking two queen room facing the courtyard and were very happy with the location. It was near the ice machine but we didn't hear a thing.

Pros:
Breakfast was actually better than we expected. They had peeled hard boiled eggs, packets of oatmeal, and bagels in addition to the usual breakfast foods.
Nice linens and thick towels.
Quiet room facing the courtyard.
Room size larger than average.

Cons:
Bed was too soft for us.
Sliding door to balcony had to be slammed shut before it would actually lock.
First floor of our building facing the bridge reeked of smoke; luckily the second floor smelled much better.
Wireless works but you must find a good connection as there are several networks to choose from. Networks are identified by a room number.
Bathroom is functional but small.

I would stay here again if I was in the neighborhood and didn't want to splurge. We paid about $129 by calling the hotel directly instead of booking via the website which quoted $160+.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — Great location for commuting to attractions at a reasonable price.
    • Disliked — Beds were too soft.
    • Any tips/secrets for future travellers? — Only King rooms face the preserve.
