Looks like the Scenic Circle Hotels bought this older place to be closer to town ( a definite benefit).
Friendly staff, but short on help.
Not handicapped assessible; has a restaurant (but we ate at Alice Mays);
Rooms big and were clean but dated; room heater didn't work.
Coin operated laundry machines on site.

The tour company I was with stayed here two nights and I didn't think it was too bad!. There is a newish two storey wing that is perhaps 50 yards from the hotel. When it rains, which I believe is ofter, the noise from the corregated iron roof (common in NZ) can be a little noiseyand you have to walk under covered walkways to the main hotel The Table d'hote meals are fine. (or you can eat elsewhere in Franz Josef. It looks like there may be lesser accomodation (where Coach Driver and Tour Manager stayed)...Spend thr money and go for something half decent. See the "imax" film, see the climbing wall, ...and unless you are walking up to, on or flying over the glacier, prepare to be underwhelmed!...but there ain't too much wrong with the Hotel.

the hotel is okay, but not worth the money. stay at the youth hostel or at a backpacker's, it's more fun and the rooms are certainly not worse.. my room in the Franz Josef Glacier Hotel was old, the pillows, blankets and probably the carpet were smelly. bathroom was fine, but all in all not worth the price you pay for the hotel.

On checking in we were told the restaurant was fully booked, although
the manager offered alternative suggestions, including the hotel's own bar/bistro adjacent to the Mueller Wing. It transpired the food was cooked in the same kitchen! Our bedroom was tired, shabby, with a dripping tap and expensive in comparison with others in New Zealand. When we turned up for breakfast within the allotted time, the dining room had been cleared (after the coach tour had left) and it was suggested we should go elsewhere. We declined and they did in fact cook breakfast for us. This was at 09.00 and breakfast was available till 09.30. Their excuse was that they didn't realise there were independent travellers staying in the hotel - but the morning manager said they had known and breakfast should have been available without discussion. The location for the glaciers is superb, but the grounds are also tired, and unappealing. Our view of the hotel was endorsed by members of a coach party. This hotel needs major investment and refurbishment.
