My wife and I stayed here in April 2012 whilst exploring the south island of New Zealand. The complex reminds me of a 1960's Fat Camp which the current owners have done their best to revive with modern paint colours and new carpets.
We were greeted by a clumsy bell boy, and an inept, bumbling concierge who couldn't decide whether to help us with our bags, or leave them for us to carry.
Whilst the rooms are filled with stylish and modern furniture, they are very small. The bathrooms remind me of a budget bathroom on a cruise ship - about 3 square metres in total. However, I must admit the rooms and bathrooms are very clean and neat - I have no complaints with the cleanliness.
The internet connection is basically non-existent.
The biggest let down was the hotel's restaurant. Being a town whose economy revolves primarily around the Franz Josef Glacier, there aren't too many options for food in the township which is why we decided to eat at the hotel restaurant. The food, which was amongst the most expensive we encountered in all of NZ, was horrible. I can only describe it as school camp food. The vegetables were frozen then microwaved. There was no mention of the strong presence of bacon in my wife's fish dish (neither on the menu, or from the waitress). Flavourless, colourless, overcooked, and overpriced.
This place has the potential to a decent hotel, with great facilities, but unfortunately it's let down by it's inexperienced staff and it's large price tag.
No bang for buck.
