We stayed in Columbine Cottage #3, and it was clean, cozy, nicely decorated and had everything we needed. Everyone there was very helpful and nice, and the wildlife was plentiful with elk on the property and beautiful birds visiting the bird feeder right outside our window. The location was absolutely perfect for visiting Rocky Mountain National Park, and we were so thrilled that we found this place for our first visit to this area. We would definitely want to stay here again for a return visit.

Here are just some of the reasons I loved the McGregor Mountain Lodge:
+ Location: It is very close to the Fall River entrance to RMNP; It's near Estes Park (maybe 2 miles) but without the feeling of being in a touristy area
+ Cabins: Ours was a Lower Chalet room and it was great; Fireplace, kitchen, large windows, comfortable beds, swing in front, etc.. I can honestly say that it was better than their website pictures look. Very clean!
+ Hospitality: Susan could not have been nicer; She went out of her way to make sure our stay was perfect; The cider and cookies were delicious! All of the employees we met were exceptionally welcoming.
+ Views: The cabins are high enough on the slope that you have nice views in pretty much every direction.
+ Wildlife: There were two elk outside our cabin, chipmunks running around, and birds flitting about (there are also foxes around the lodge but we never saw them).
+ Hiking: The area directly behind the lodge is part of the park so you can literally walk out of your cabin and begin a great hike. My wife and I climbed to a rock outcropping (approx 1000 feet elevation gain from lodge) and it was one of the most fun experiences on our trip.
+ Book/Video/Game library: If it gets too cold or snowy and you just want to relax inside, you'll find plenty of options in their library.
+ Prices: The off-season prices are a great deal.
+ "Daisy" : We fell in love with their resident Chesapeake Bay Retriever! What a sweet dog!

When visiting a popular national park like RMNP, I think timing is a very important consideration. I personally prefer the off-season because I hate crowds. While we were there, it almost felt like we had the park to ourselves. As far as weather goes, there was some snow but not so much that it was a big hassle. The downside is that part of Trail Ridge Road is closed as well as some of the shops and restaurants but it's well-worth it.

We stayed in Cabin 14 and really enjoyed it! We found the beds and furniture to be comfortable, and the cabin to be clean and spacious. I loved the patio right outside the cabin and the view can't be beat. The staff were very friendly. We definitley plan to return here.

Just spent a week in one of their cabins. Great location one minute from the Fall River entrance to RMNP and four minutes to Estes Park. Clean roomy cabin and friendly helpful staff. Would definitely stay there again.

My wife and I have been in Estes before and upon planning for our latest trip came to TripAdvisor for advice. The reviews of McGregor were outstanding, so we picked it as our destination when staying in Estes this last time around.

After our week long visit we are wondering if we stayed in the right place, because our experience was nothing like what others have said (save a couple of reviews).

We are not high falutin' folks, we don't expect much. However, we have traveled extensively, for business and pleasure and have come to expect some things for $150 night. One such expectation is to have your sheets changed and the room at least vacuumed each day. Neither of those things happened on our stay. In fact, we had to CHANGE THE SHEETS OURSELVES!!! During the middle of our stay, noticing they hadn't been changed, we literally went to the office, procured sheets, then changed them. Later we found out if you want "housekeeping", that is an extra 15% charge - and changing the sheets is part of "housekeeping". They did change the garbage every day and bring new towels, so all was not lost.

Sleep could have been better, what with a female fox and her cubs living underneath our cabin (#12). We love the outdoors and revel in her beauty, but a young family of rambunctious nocturnal animals is not conducive to a good night of slumber before hitting the trails at RMNP for a week of hiking.

Word of caution...if you are a hiker, and an early morning one at that, don't expect to get a cup of coffee or have a question answered before you depart for the day. The office opens at 8am, not good if you want to get an early start. Most places we have stayed open at least at 6am, some earlier. When they are open, they sometimes have cookies out, but don't fall for the "fresh baked goodness" others have proclaimed - they are straight out of the box!

On the positive side, Chris and the whole staff were very friendly. The views were very good. It is easy to get to and the traffic does not bother. It is close to RMNP and a pretty drive along Fall River to downtown Estes.

Overall, we are hopeful that for this price we will discover an alternative to McGregor...if not...we will stay here again - and bring our own sheets!!!
