This was our third visit to Spruce Lake Resort & Campground. It has become a tradition to take our two oldest grandsons there every July. This time we were also looking forward to cooler temperatures than we had been experiencing in Missouri. Estes Park, Colorado did not disappoint. And Spruce Lake is a great place to bring your kids even if you don't own an RV, with rustic log cabins for rent.
There were lots of activities to keep the boys busy. They fished for trout in the big pond, road their bikes all over the campground, went swimming in the pool, and we explored Rocky Mountain National Park which is just down the road from Spruce Lake. The town of Estes Park is within walking distance from Spruce Lake, and offers numerous shops, candy stores, and ice cream parlors, along with a large variety of good restaurants to choose from.
The campground is beautifully maintained, the staff is friendly, the restrooms and showers are large and clean as is the laundromat. There are ice cream socials, pancake breakfasts and even a karaoke night.
Our one disappointment was that the elk did not visit the campground while we were there this time. But the regular appearance of a little bear during the day and also at night, helped make up for the absence of the elk which are plentiful and easy to see almost everywhere else in and outside of town. We got some good pictures the night the little bear decided to rummage through our neighbor's campsite. He was also spotted during the day by our grandsons while out riding their bikes. We were told that bears are becoming more frequent visitors to the campground, so it's something to keep in mind and always be aware of when visiting any wilderness area.
The boys had a wonderful time, and we've already made our reservations to stay at Spruce Lake again next July.
