There are museums and then there is the RISD Art Museum! What a wonderful place. It has a surprisingly large collection and you need a half day to a full day to see everything. If you spend a day, take a lunch break at a local spot, and come back for more great art. The are rooms of ancient art-Oriental, Greek, Egyptian, etc. as well as contemporary art, some off beat, quirky things done by students; paintings and sculptures by some of the masters--Monet, Manet, Cezanne, etc. Rooms of American decorative arts, painting by Copley, Gilbert Stuart, Sully, etc. This museum was a real pleasant surprise--we had read about it, but had no idea just how great it is.

The RISD Museum of Art is one of the best small college art museums in the US. Plan to spend a relaxing 90 minutes here and you'll be treated to a nice survey of world art. The Benefit Street area is worth a stroll in its own right - an incredible collection of Colonial homes that are still lived in!
