El Guero's is a Tucson Original, and every time I go there, someone is taking a picture out front of it--so it's also a Tucson Icon too. While many people will say the Sonora dogs are the best (and indeed they are) there's more on the menu to enjoy. Namely the carne asada and pollo (beef and chicken) tacos and burros and the Caramelo--a chalupa like stuffed flour tortilla bursting with beans and meat and cheese. Quesedillas (Cheese crisps) are made with real Mexican oaxaca cheese. The condiment bar holds a variety of salsas and toppings, but it also offers taco cart "snacks" like roasted green onions and cucumbers with green sauce for dipping to chomp on while you wait for your order. Wash it all down with a frosty bottle of Mexican Coca Cola...the old recipe.
Us crusty locals will have visited the original, stationary Guero Canelo's on 12th, in the heart of the barrio, which is comprised of outdoor grills and stadium platform dining area covered by blue tarp. Don't be afraid to visit this Guero's, it's what true border dining is all about.
End your meal with a superb slice of flan--not too dense, not too custardy.
