“A hassle free stay at the Travelodge Alamo....”

Travelodge San Antonio Alamo

18 Jan 2007

We stayed at the Travelodge Alamo for 3 nights as part of our 7 month round the world trip.

The rate was extremely cheap at $45 a night + tax and with it being located 10-15mins from the Alamo & Riverwalk we thought we had booked a bargain.

In the end we agreed that we did get a bargain. Contrary to other reviews, we found the reception staff to be very friendly and helpful with directions, and for providing us with an iron and board, something which was much needed after travelling around with just a backpack.

The room was fine. Not the Ritz by any means but a good budget room, slightly tatty around the edges but perfectly adequate for a few nights stay. We did find the king bed to be a little on the small side but it served its purpose. The bathroom area was ok as well with a good pressured shower.

Location was excellent, just a 10-15min walk to a lot of the major highlights in San Antonio. We didn't feel threatened at all although I can see why some people have felt the general area is a little dubious. I think the 6 months previous of experiencing places like Cape Town, Phnom Penh and Bangkok had certainly toughened us up.

The free breakfast was also a nice touch. It was a little on the small side but the waitress was always having a laugh and joke with us. The diner itself was very clean.

All in all we enjoyed the 3 nights we had in San Antonio and the Travelodge Alamo. There are obviously better hotels, but the prices being charged on or near the Riverwalk are horrendous. This hotel was very cheap in a great location, what more could you ask for?

One recommendation for food, the County Line...perfection BBQ if ever I've tasted it.

“Stay Away From This Hotel”

Travelodge San Antonio Alamo

We did not have a good experience with this hotel and would advise others to avoid this establishment. Although the rates were relatively inexpensive, the room was far below average. The carpet was bare, the mattress was hard, the towels were small and course, and lightbulbs were missing from two lamps. There wasn't a battery in the remote control for the television, and no one at the hotel seemed to know how to get a battery. The TV reception was spotty at best and they did not have all of the channels that were listed on their channel guide.

There was also a significant problem with their internet service. The advertisements and the person with whom we booked our reservations promised internet service, but when we arrived at the hotel we had no internet service. We were given different explanations for this. One employee told us that the hotel was changing service providers. Another employee told us that the internet service was "broken" and they were waiting for it to be fixed. Regardless of the real reason, we didn't notice any internet hardware in the room and didn't even find any evidence that they ever had internet service (written directions, etc.). The front-desk staff seemed remarkably unconcerned when we told them that we had selected the hotel because they had advertised internet service, but they did tell us that we could walk a few blocks to use the internet at a local library.

The complimentary breakfast in an adjoining diner was very small and of mediocre quality. To add to our overall annoyances, two of the three doors to the diner--the two doors within the courtyard of the hotel--were locked and guests were instructed to walk around the building on the street to the third door. This itself is not a huge problem, but it rained for our entire stay, and this required us to walk in the rain to enter the diner rather than use the other two more convenient and covered (but locked) doors. Finally, when we went to pay for our meal we were told that they only accepted cash. Again...another walk through the rain to and from our room to get cash.

The service overall was terrible. The front-desk staff didn't know the answers to most of our questions, such as how to get to the Riverwalk, good restaurants in the area, etc. When we checked out of the hotel, we found that there was an additional charge for the room safe, even though we never used the safe. When we mentioned this to the front-desk staff, we were told that this was for "our protection" and that we had been told about this charge at our check-in. There was a statement on our check-in form telling us about this charge along with a space for the customer to initial, but we had not been told about this at check-in and thus had not signed our initials. Granted, we could have read the entire form before signing, but in everyday practice customers rely on the staff to point out the additional areas that need signatures or initials. When we complained about this, one of the maintenance staff who was hanging out in the lobby curtly told us to "call the main office" if we wanted to complain.

We will never stay at this hotel again and encourage others to find another place to stay.

“Just Don't!”

Travelodge San Antonio Alamo

My advice is don't.
There is a reason that it is cheaper than the rest of the hotels in the downtown area! I thought it could n't be that bad so booked and had to cancel the rest of our stay.
We arrived and felt worried as we got out the car. Being stared at is not a hobby of mine. We checked in and the receptionist was not welcoming either. It was very hot so we tried to get ice, but it didn;t work so we asked reception and was informed that we would have to pay for it. There was not fridge in the room and we could hear the traffic.
As I have said we cancelled the rest of our stay in San Antonio and left after that night. We would have left earlier but it was too late to cancel the first night.
When trying to complain the receptionist refused to give me her name!

Definitely within 15 min. walking distance of the Alamo/Riverwalk area, although I wouldn't want to go back and forth with kids several times a day. The walk is through a typically rundown urban area, but never felt dangerous. There is a trolley stop right there, too, which would get you to the Alamo in minutes. Buy the $3 all day pass (but the drivers don't sell them--you have to go to the trolley office near the Alamo or any of the big RWalk hotels). The office staff was curt, you are charged $3 upon checkout for the room safe (even if not used), and have to leave a $10 credit card refundable deposit to use the phone (even for the free local calls). Also, the free breakfast is eggs, hash browns, biscuit, sausage, and coffee/tea ONLY at an attached diner. If you want anything different you can order it off the menu for a cost. Otherwise, it was comfortable (good AC), worn but clean, quiet, and all the residents I saw were solidly middle class. Good access to the interstates. Take your room key to use the ice machine. Recommended to anyone on a budget.

My family and I are thinking of relocating to Texas. To save money we thought we would get two suites and split the cost. It advertised online as well as in the Travelodge. Two double beds and a sofa sleeper with a refrigerator and stove.
When we arrived the motel van picked us up at the airport. He announced that his air conditioner had just went out an hour ago.(Texas was experiencing record heat )
Upon arrival to the Travelodge we weren't impressed but decided you can't judge a book by its cover. Inside 2 of the workers in a back room were discussing how they had found a body in the bathtub . Again not knowing the whole conversation we checked in, after a little haggling because they tried to charge us more than was quoted to us.
There wasn't a sofa sleeper. The bedroom did have two beds but the bathroom was in there also. You almost had to climb over the bed to get to the bathroom. The appliances were so old that the refrigerator needed to be defrosted and the stove was filthy. The kitchen didn't have any items to prepare a meal. The room had an awful smell.
We quickly grabbed a phone book and found other lodgings. We didn't let it ruin our trip but I will never stay at another Travelodge again.
