“Family-friendly B&B”

Just came back from a one week trip to the Pacific Northwest. I planned for one night at San Juan Island. When trying to book a place to stay, I noticed that many B&B places do not welcome children 12-year and under. Finally found Harrison Suite and called them to confirm their children policy. Not only Anna Maria (the innkeeper) welcomed our children, she even asked for what special dietary need and food allergy the children may have.

We book the Shaw suite, which is their lower-cost suite. It does not have a hot tub or bath tub, just a shower. However it is perfect for our family of two adults and two young children. The platform bed is very nice and the children can have the day beds.

The location is excellent - walking distance to town center and ferry. The staff is very friendly. The suite is clean. Although the towels and linens are not as new as what we normally see at large hotels, they are totaly clean and serviceable. The hand-made soap is a nice touch.

The food is excellent - the welcome cookies (with my children's allergy concern addressed), the chocalate, and the wonderful breakfast.

Oh, almost forget that there is free Internet access (via wireless or at the lobby of their other property) as well as TV/VCR combo in the room, with many tapes at the lobby to borrow.

Overall this is a very positive experience. Highly recommended.

Our stay at the Harrison House Bed and Breakfast was great. My husband, son, and Russian "daughter" stayed in the Orcas Room. We were told that it would be a tight fit for 4, and it was. But it worked for us and we had such a good time. The breakfasts were wonderful and filling -- fortifying us for the day of exploration ahead. And we needed fortification because the days were typical for March in Puget Sound -- cold and windy, with some rain and even some snow.

The guests we shared breakfast with were intersting and made breakfasts enjoyable. I hope we get a chance to go back and spend more time there. I highly recommend this B&B.

My wife and I stayed at the Harrison House Suites about 2 blocks from whre the ferry lets people off on San Juan Island. It was perfect. We had a room that peeked at the ocean where the ferries were coming and going.
The breakfasts were amazing - 3 or 4 courses of gourment food and the table looked so appetizing. They have a golden that is part of the fixtures there - very friendly, the dog and the place.
Went Whale Watching with San Juan Safaris - saw orca whales in the wild. The staff explained the importance of keeping the legal distance from the orca and other animals. They were great and taught us a lot of things we did not know or ever think of. Very friendly.
Had dinner one night at Friday Harbor House. Classy place with real good food.
Everyone was very nice to us over all and we had a great time. I would definately recommend anyone go to these places and definatley to to San Juan Island. We did this back in 2007 end of August. If I did it again, I might go in September. I was told prices go down, weather is still good and kids are back in school.

Found info on Harrison House Suites in a San Juan Island B&B publication. Was on Orcas Island last weekend and decided to extend our stay in the San Juans so called the San Juan Island B&B toll-free number to get availability info. Was told by person at 800 number that YES, They had just had a call from the Harrison House Suites and they had a suite available. I called and spoke to the HH Suites directly and was told they had a wonderful 1 bedroom suite with a kitchen and it'd be $250 a night. We thought it was a steep price but because of the description in the B&B publication we thought okay, it had a view of the harbor, a fireplace and a hot tub. So we waited a couple hours for the Orcas to San Juan ferry and 3 plus hours later we made our way to the B&B. Unfortunately, we learned our suite was not in the Harrison House Suites, but in the basement of a restored building adjacent called the Tucker House. When I say basement, I mean basement. Although it was furnished and fairly clean, there was NO WAY it was worth $250 a night. Dave one of the owners showed us the suite and was nice enough. However, when we called the Harrison House Suites #, we spoke to the other proprietor Anne Marie who denied misleading us, was demeaning and derogatory and basically told me that if "I had made reservations the proper way, I would have known exactly what I was getting". We did NOT want to stay, but she refused to cancel the charge on our credit card citing that she had turned down people all day for the room. Funny, we had only made the reservation 3 hours before. Anne Marie was downright rude and obviously doesn't understand the impact of her attitude that we as the customer WERE WRONG and she was right. We did NOT appreciate being treated the way we were treated and it's too bad because in this day when people share info widely across the Internet it will have an impact. Bottom line is there is NO WAY you'd know from the ads in the publication that there are actually 3 buildings owned by Anne Maria on the same lot because each location has a different website address and you won't know what you're getting.
The room we were in was the Middleton Suite which had no view, was adjacent to a busy, loud street, had a gravel parking area, cars parked 6 inches from the window of our room, you could hear every footstep and every sound from the first floor directly over our heads, bathroom was dusty and had a tattered rug on the floor, cheap furnishings. Breakfast was okay, nice that coffee, juice and milk were provided. Would not stay here again - it definitely was NOT worth $250 - we were totally ripped off!

I've never written a review but felt compelled since our experience was so different. When we first arrived, Anna Maria asked about our tastes and recommended an ideal lunch spot. The location was great & the room included many wonderful extra touches. The soaps were awesome. The kitchen was well stocked included wonderful teas, microwave popcorn, fresh OJ & a spice rack. (I almost never cook when I'm away b/c who wants to buy entire bottles of herbs to fix a single meal?) The housekeeping was excellent. In addition to the standard stuff, they washed & put away the dish & glasses we left in the sink. They had treats waiting for the kids. Kids borrowed a couple videos from their library. We had reservations to go whale watching and the place called & cancelled us under an hour before we were supposed to set sail. Anna Maria made a few phonecalls (because she knows everyone on the Island) and got us booked with another outfit. She also let me keep the book I was reading (Devil wears Prada) from the inroom library. The food was so good, I'm not surprised Anna Maria has published a cookbook! Exceeded our expectations.
