Found info on Harrison House Suites in a San Juan Island B&B publication. Was on Orcas Island last weekend and decided to extend our stay in the San Juans so called the San Juan Island B&B toll-free number to get availability info. Was told by person at 800 number that YES, They had just had a call from the Harrison House Suites and they had a suite available. I called and spoke to the HH Suites directly and was told they had a wonderful 1 bedroom suite with a kitchen and it'd be $250 a night. We thought it was a steep price but because of the description in the B&B publication we thought okay, it had a view of the harbor, a fireplace and a hot tub. So we waited a couple hours for the Orcas to San Juan ferry and 3 plus hours later we made our way to the B&B. Unfortunately, we learned our suite was not in the Harrison House Suites, but in the basement of a restored building adjacent called the Tucker House. When I say basement, I mean basement. Although it was furnished and fairly clean, there was NO WAY it was worth $250 a night. Dave one of the owners showed us the suite and was nice enough. However, when we called the Harrison House Suites #, we spoke to the other proprietor Anne Marie who denied misleading us, was demeaning and derogatory and basically told me that if "I had made reservations the proper way, I would have known exactly what I was getting". We did NOT want to stay, but she refused to cancel the charge on our credit card citing that she had turned down people all day for the room. Funny, we had only made the reservation 3 hours before. Anne Marie was downright rude and obviously doesn't understand the impact of her attitude that we as the customer WERE WRONG and she was right. We did NOT appreciate being treated the way we were treated and it's too bad because in this day when people share info widely across the Internet it will have an impact. Bottom line is there is NO WAY you'd know from the ads in the publication that there are actually 3 buildings owned by Anne Maria on the same lot because each location has a different website address and you won't know what you're getting.
The room we were in was the Middleton Suite which had no view, was adjacent to a busy, loud street, had a gravel parking area, cars parked 6 inches from the window of our room, you could hear every footstep and every sound from the first floor directly over our heads, bathroom was dusty and had a tattered rug on the floor, cheap furnishings. Breakfast was okay, nice that coffee, juice and milk were provided. Would not stay here again - it definitely was NOT worth $250 - we were totally ripped off!

I've never written a review but felt compelled since our experience was so different. When we first arrived, Anna Maria asked about our tastes and recommended an ideal lunch spot. The location was great & the room included many wonderful extra touches. The soaps were awesome. The kitchen was well stocked included wonderful teas, microwave popcorn, fresh OJ & a spice rack. (I almost never cook when I'm away b/c who wants to buy entire bottles of herbs to fix a single meal?) The housekeeping was excellent. In addition to the standard stuff, they washed & put away the dish & glasses we left in the sink. They had treats waiting for the kids. Kids borrowed a couple videos from their library. We had reservations to go whale watching and the place called & cancelled us under an hour before we were supposed to set sail. Anna Maria made a few phonecalls (because she knows everyone on the Island) and got us booked with another outfit. She also let me keep the book I was reading (Devil wears Prada) from the inroom library. The food was so good, I'm not surprised Anna Maria has published a cookbook! Exceeded our expectations.

We stayed four nights at the Harrison House in Friday Harbor and were disappointed. The room was dusty, the shower door would not close properly and the towels smelled like mildew. One day, the maid left a bunch of wet towels and trash in our room and we found broken glass in the sink. Our first day there, we stepped out of the shower to find a painter at our window noisily scraping off loose paint. We asked the owners if they could hold off on the painting until we were gone from our room. He was back in a couple of days in exactly the same spot. The traffic was loud and noisy right outside our window. A truck idled for about 30 minutes filling our room with the smell of deisel. We were in the Orcas suite, supposedly one of the nicer units. The breakfasts were the only bright spot, but that's a lot of hassle for a good breakfast. After we persisted we got a modest discount off of our room. We wished we had stayed somewhere else. B&B's are hit and miss. This one missed.

    • Any tips/secrets for future travellers? — Always ask if they are doing upgrades or repairs and ask for a discount if you choose to stay there.

We purchased the Harrison House in January 2005. During that time, we have undertaken many major renovation projects to increase the guest experience of this historic property. We have redone the interiors of all five guest suites including new furniture, linens and window treatments; installed a new commercial kitchen in our Garden Café where we serve breakfast; replaced the main deck and installed an extensive landscape design with fountains and ponds. Much of this work occurs during the winter when guests are not around. But unfortunately, in the northwest, the only option for exterior painting is during the summer months when the weather is warm and dry. The contractors that we use are incredibly sensitive to our guests’ privacy and comfort. They work from 10 until 4 pm when our guests are out around the Island enjoying the many activities San Juan Island has to offer.

In this particular situation, our painters misunderstood our instructions and started work on the side of the house where these guests were staying. When these guests brought it to our attention, we apologized and immediately moved the painters to the other side of the house which was unoccupied.

These guests requested special Gluten Free breakfasts each morning. Each morning we delivered them a specially prepared breakfast accommodating their dietary requests. Each afternoon, we also delivered them special gluten free cookies. We pride ourselves on our food service using the freshest ingredients from the local farms on the Islands. Despite the fact that we serve upwards of 60 guests each day, we take the time to ensure that all of our guests have a wholesome savory start to their day and can fully experience our breakfast service whether they observe gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian, low fat, vegan or kosher diets.

These guests called to complain about the towels and trash and my husband and I personally went to their room and immediately delivered to them a stack of brand new towels and removed the trash.

We did our very best to offer these guests a quality experience as we do to all of our guests that walk through out doors. Unfortunately, despite our best intentions, we some fell short in these guests’ eyes. In 2006, we hosted 3,597 guests and as you can see by the other trip advisor listings, the guest comments on our web site and the notoriety we have received by major travel publications, this was not a typical guest experience to say the least. We assure you that Dave and I and our staff at the Harrison House and our sister property the Tucker House Inn will do everything possible to make your stay with us enjoyable and memorable. We look forward to having the opportunity to serve you.

Had a great stay at the Harrison House. The owners and the innkeeper are super friendly and every request was accommodated with enthusiasm. The food was first rate and they made a special dinner for our group of four adults and five children taking into account the children's different ages, likes and dislikes. Our room was very comfortable and clean. Easy walk to town.

We stayed this past weekend for a quick relaxing vacation. The Harrison House Suites seemed like a home away from home, replete with our own family in the Innkeepers. The breakfasts were gourmet feasts- we could hardly finish the desert course.

The room we stayed in Overlooked the harbor- and we had our own hot tub which was surprisingly clean and well kept. It was just so peaceful looking out at the boats passing- we could have stayed in the room and never even ventured out to the town. But we eventually did- on foot- as the "main" street and attractions are about 2 blocks away. when we came home there were warm homemade cookies waiting for us.

Overall, the bed and breakfast is very clean and almost luxurious- ti's much nicer than other places we've stayed here. Now that we found it, we will definitely book here exclusively from here on out.
