We found Lulu's about a year ago, and it has been a welcome addition to our list of stand-by comfort food locations in Santa Fe. We have been there for lunch many times, and the service is always prompt, and the food fresh. But going there for dinner is the real treat! Lulu makes sure that each guest feels special and welcome, and is always on hand to answer menu questions and make suggestions to anyone who is looking for something new to try from their varied menu.
The food quality is amazing. My favorite dinner here starts with Hot and Sour Soup. It is always fresh, topped with crisp chopped green onion, and served with crispy wonton strips. If there are 3 or 4 people in our party, we order a large bowl and have our soup course "family style".
Sometimes we order potstickers as a second appetizer. They are made from scratch, with a classic pork filling with a nice touch of ginger, and a light soy-based dipping sauce.
There are many main courses to choose from, but we always make sure that at least one person at the table orders Lemon Chicken. Half of the fun of eating authentic Chinese food is to eat family style and sample everything at the table! The lemon chicken starts with tender and juicy breast meat that is pounded thin and pan fried with a delicious crisp breading. It is sliced and presented beautifully on the serving platter, garnished with lemon slices and beautifully carved daikon raddish roses. The chicken is covered with a thin drizzle of AMAZING lemon sauce. The sauce is obviously made fresh with fresh squeezed lemons, and the intensity of the flavor is the perfect compliment to the crispy tender chicken. In polite company, it is hard to resist licking the serving plate so none of the sauce goes to waste! And speaking of fresh ... I realized last night that I always hear a meat mallet banging on the butcher block back in the kitchen a few minutes after we order Lemon Chicken ... each piece is pounded, breaded and pan fried to order, so the crispy crust is perfect every time.
Our other favorite "not-to-miss" dish is the Chinese Green Beans and Pork. We usually order one for the table and we all fight over the last bits. The green beans are stir fried with savory ground pork, done to a crispy perfection.
We went to Lulu's for Chinese New Year this year, and were completely overcome by the success of the night. There were two seatings, with an exotic buffet of both old favorites and Lulu's traditional family specialty holiday and "good luck" dishes. There were two seatings, and the only issue with the evening was the hundreds of people who packed into the dining room for the evening. Even with all the people in line, the buffet was kept fresh and the food kept coming all through the night. It was a very good first effort, and I overheard Lulu saying that next year she is going to setup 2 buffets instead of 1, to better accommodate the large number of guests who come to celebrate and begin their new lunar year at Lulu's.
Simple comfort food that nourishes the body and the soul! Lulu's moderate prices provide an incredible value. With large portions and prompt gracious service, Lulu's is a hit for all occasions ... a quiet dinner for two, a family celebration, or an evening out with friends.
Thanks, Lulu, and we will see you again soon!
