“Overpriced, Terrible Service and cold tasteless food”

We had dinner at the Gateway Restaurant Saturday 2/17. The Restaurant was recommended to us by the Hotel we were staying at and we found the setting overlooking the River very beautiful when we drove by. We made reservations on Saturday morning via phone and the Man taking our reservation was very friendly. He told us there would be a band playing on the Terrace that night and he would try to get us a spot on the terrace for our 8 PM reservation. We arrived 1/2 hour early and waited for our table at the Bar which was fine. We did notice that dinner guests kept coming to the Bar, buying their drinks there and taking the drinks back to the Terrace. Later we found out they did this because the waitress was to busy to take drink orders or bring drinks to the tables. We did end up getting a nice table on the terrace overlooking the beautiful river. They had a busy night with several large parties of mostly locals and several tables with couples on the Terrace. The service was extremly slow but we don't blame the Waitress as she had to take care of all tables on the terrace alone. We felt sorry for her. The owners were around but did not help out with the situation at all. They were to busy drinking and socializing with the locals. The prices are very high. Most entrees are between $20 and over $30. We are not overly picky people but for these prices we do expect good service and food. The setting alone does not make the Restaurant. We had to wait about 30 minutes for our wine and water, another 15 for the bread basket and placing our order. Than we had to wait for another hour for our food (maybe it was even longer). No one ever checked back to ask if we wanted another glass of wine. When the food finaly arrived it was cold and to top it off both our entres were tasteless. My husband had the scallop entree and I had Trout Almondine. Both was really not good at all. We did not want to ruin our evening by complaining and making a scene but we were upset to have spent so much money for such a bad dinner experience. Every table had to wait for their meals and service as long as we did including the locals. And they did not complain or seem upset about it. We did notice that other couples looked very unhappy, especially the Man that had to get wine for their wifes at the Bar because they could not get any service. This was the worst service and food we ever had anywhere. We would never return to this restaurant even so the setting is very pretty and would not recommend the Gateway Restaurant to anyone.

The man who we made our reservations with was very friendly and helpful and we were looking forward to a romantic dinner. The view is wonderful, the restaurant in right on the river with scenic large boulders. There was a singer/guitarist which was a nice touch and playing at a nice volume. The other customers all semmed to be locals. The prices are fairly high. The iceberg lettuce salad was about $10. Dinner for one vegetarian non-drinker and one tender filet mignon dinner with 2 glasses of okay wine and one desert was over $90! The food was only okay, but the service was very bad. It was slow. We got one small roll each. It was slow enough to color the entire dinner and make us really regret spending the money there. We are not cheap, we spent $250 on our anniversary dinner last month, but this was just not worth it, even with the great view.

We celebrated my birthday at the Gateway Restaurant with a terrific meal. We sat outside at a table with a fabulous view of the river. We had filet and it was excellent, as were the salads and the remainder of the meal. Also, my wine by the glass was generously poured. I truly look forward to eating there again, as it was memorable for both of us. It is not too often that one is fortunate enough to have both food and scenery to die for!

“The Best View & Very Good Food”

We stopped in (8PM) on a cool evening in May. The view was spectacular, the help was nice and friendly, the bar was stocked(always a good thing), and the food was very good. I will be back this spring with my entire family, as this is the place to dine at the south entrance.

“Disappointed”

I feel I must voice my disappointment with the Gateway Restaurant after reading the previous glowing review as well as the AAA book's good description. It's a great location and we were excited to sit outdoors with the beautiful river flowing below us, but the outdoors soon lost it's appeal to the heat and the bugs! We were constantly swatting flies as we tried to eat the pricey but average food. The salads were good, otherwise our chicken entrees were really lacking (cheese on the broccoli?)

Maybe it's better to order a steak and sit inside with a glass of wine, I don't know.. The place was busy, though I would not go back.
