This was our final planned stop on our 2-week, 4,100-mile Yellowstone & Dakotas road trip during mid-June 2011, and as you could guess, we were pretty much running on fumes by the time we arrived in Medora. The Rough Riders Hotel was the perfect way to cap the ‘vacation’ portion of our trip before we embarked on the drudgery of whipping home thru North Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The hotel perked us up and put smiles on our faces. Very, very glad we stayed.
Our lodging during this trip fell into 3 categories: Standard (Hampton Inns; Canyon Lodge at Yellowstone); Historic (Old Faithful Inn; Lake Yellowstone Hotel); and something my wife called ‘Western Chic’ (The Cody in Cody, Wyo.; Spring Creek Ranch in Jackson Hole). … Don’t mistake Western Chic for necessarily being a luxury resort that will wait on you hand-and-foot – sadly, $150 to $300 doesn’t get you that anymore. This is something spiffier and fun and in some cases more modern & expensive than Standard lodging. The Rough Riders is classic ‘Western Chic’ …
The exterior of the place is handsome. The lobby is impressive. The restaurant served a great breakfast that was worth the splurge. Wish the place had a pool, but we were only here one night. Our new-wing view was pretty creepy – straight over a backyard, but again, we were only here one night and I was the only one who bothered to pull up the blinds and take a look just out of curiosity. … It’s close to the Musical and the beautiful National Park and the interstate. The Rough Riders hotel is the heartbeat of the tiny, sleepy-but-super downtown and really completes the Medora experience. We loved it.
