We stayed at The Mansion for a Friday evening on the way to Canada to pick up a new puppy.
The Pros:
- We checked in well after the 5-7PM complimentary evening reception was over (we just had to have those awesome wings at the Anchor Bar!). We were promptly taken up to our room and were advised we could have one complimentary drink anyway. The spread was pretty impressive, with quite a selection of wines and mixed drinks. Prices were reasonable even after the happy hour.
- The room was lovely, with a cathedral ceiling, sitting area, large bay window, whirlpool tub with multi jetted shower, and a DVD player. We found the room lit with tea lights and two fresh baked cookies by our side (and they were delicious!)
- The staff was very friendly and eager to please. Don't expect "butlers", instead expect a well trained, upbeat, genuine youthful staff that will do whatever they can to please you. Valet parking is complimentary, and they will not take no for an answer when it comes to luggage handling. I did tip, but note there is a "service fee" added on your bill so I don't know if this is required or not.
The Cons:
-Only a queen sized bed. When you can get a kind sized at the Motel 6, this should be de rigeur for any luxury class hotel.
- Soundproofing is not good, with street noise and noise from other guests coming through. It is an old building, so perhaps this is to be expected.
- The complimentary breakfast was not to our tastes. it is certainly European style, but I'm sure some basic cereals, bagels and a toaster would not be too much to ask. A cooked breakfast is available for an extra fee. ($11/person for eggs, potatoes, bacon and toast)
- Water pressure was so-so at best, which detracted from the multi jet shower.
-AAA discounts are offered only Sunday-Thursday. This is the first AAA rated location I have stayed in that has this policy, and for a 4 diamond hotel it seems misguided. We were not staying during a holiday or local event weekend.
This are all minor issues to be sure, but they detracted from the overall experience. At 265/night in a city which is not exactly a resort location, we expected a bit more.
