“Perfect for us”

Our one week stay here in early August was perfect for us. We stayed in a corner end unit on the third floor, from which was visible the larger Wyndham Resort directly across the street. Wyndham took over the Inn on Long Wharf last year and it was obvious in the tasteful renovations in the unit. Everything was clean and new. The elevator, however, was not, and made a poor first impression.

Best features:
Fantastic view of the harbour from full-length windows in the sitting/dining area.
Quiet. No sound from neighbouring room. Hardly any corridor traffic. Felt like an apartment rather than hotel room.
Option to open some windows rather than using AC, but be prepared for some fishy harbour smell!
Rooftop deck pleasant place to watch sunset and photograph Newport harbour scene.
Within walking distance to everything except mansions.
Full access to Wyndham Resort facilites.
Easy parking.
Courteous service…very quick to replace a few missing kitchen items.
Timeshare invitation mentioned once upon arrival and never again (no sales pressure).

Note: We discovered that ours was a handicap unit, which explains the HUGE bathroom. Also, unit was cleaned only once, mid-week, which was fine for us since there were plenty of towels (including beach/pool towels) and we spent very little time in the unit or the resort and toured Newport and vicinity.

We would definitely return!

“We spent New Year's Eve there!!!”

Wyndham Inn on Long Wharf

We stayed at this resort Dec 30, 2006- Jan 1, 2007. We loved the location of this place, right up against the water, every room (as far as I know) has an ocean/harbor view. The room we were in, room 555, had a king bed, kitchen (no oven) with full fridge and microwave and little stove top, floor to ceiling glass window looking right at the water. It has a huge whirlpool tub in the bathroom, this place was great, simple, but great! It is owned by the resort next door called the Fairfield Newport at Long Wharf Resort. That resort is the main one but it is set across the street from the water and more expensive, but it has an indoor/outdoor pool with a waterslide and waterfall jacuzzi that is to die for! They have lockers right there so you can walk across the street from the Inn and just change over there. They have a fireplace and a living-room-setting right next to the pool area, it's very nice. We swam New Year's Eve day (about 6:00 PM) and I have never swam in a pool that was heated outdoors with steam coming off of it! There is a tunnel way you swim thru to get outside from the inside and it's awesome! It's about 3 blocks to the Red Parrot restaurant area, and 1 block to the beginning of the shopping, it's right behind the Marriott. The NYE fireworks were set off in the Harbor and we watched them on the rooftop of our Inn and in our room. The rooftop is really cool, it fits like 80 people on it, it's a big deck on top of the 5th floor. OH, the walls in between the rooms are VERY thin so the only downside is that you can hear what's going on next door. We were woken up at 7:00 AM to someone else's alarm clock, we had to ask the front desk to call them to tell him to turn it off after 1/2 an hour! He turned it off an hour later, jerk! We booked this trip thru extraholidays.com.

In August we stayed at the other Fairfield property, Inn On the Harbor, and found it to be, overall, a far better experience than this one. Here's why.

The personnel at the Harbor property were experienced pros with quick answers and help. The Long Wharf crew consisted of a bunch of kids who responded with the deer-in-the-headlights-look when I asked simple questions. In this regard, I had the same experience as a previous reviewer.

The room layout here was identical to the Harbor but perhaps a bit larger. All bathrooms here apparently have this jacuzzi/shower combo but entry was awkward to navigate; a minor slip would mean a major headache and I would not recommend this for anyone with any kind of handicap. All bathrooms are marble. The water pressure for the jacuzzi was great but the pressure for the shower was like a dribble. The room was very clean and "refreshed" daily. "Refreshing" here meant changing the towels and washing dishes. Nothing more. This was very different from the Harbor property where the room was cleaned and made up daily. It seems to me that the Inn is the poor cousin of the Fairfield Resort across the street and treated as such.

Check-in is at the Resort, there is no attendent at all at the Inn. No one to help with baggage altho there are 3 luggage carts by the elevator. The only signs directing you to the Resort are posted in the parking bays and are easily missed at night (we did and had to ask another guest where to go) but now you know!

The "Inn" is a separate building from the Fairfield Resort but Inn occupants are permitted to use the Resort's facilities. The kid had a great time in the pool; the indoor portion has a slide and the pool continues outside. The indoor pool/slide is used under the very watchful eye of an attendant. The second, far larger pool was closed for the season.

Every time we left and every time we returned to the Inn there were Fairfield sales people standing by the front door smoking. That was annoying and they seemed oblivious.

The room was very, very quiet, had a pleasant view over the harbor and came with a seagull who tapped on our window every day looking for food. Minutes after I called, a mechanic tightened the two toilet seat bolts.

We had one child with us. He slept on the fold-out in the living room. For privacy, we closed the shutters to the bedroom but that cut off all ventilation; there is a fan but it didn't seem to work...the bathroom vent also did nothing.

If you've made it this far through this stream of consciousness, I must say that this is a good place to stay if you can't get a room at the Inn on the Harbor. Parking is ample and easy and you're just a brisk walk from brick alley. It's also a great place to stay if the swimming is an attraction. The Resort has other available amenities.

“Enjoyed our family stay”

Wyndham Inn on Long Wharf

We just returned from a week at the Fairfield Long Wharf in Newport, RI. We have two small children and the two bedroom unit we were in generally worked out well for us. The kitchen area was small but adequate. There is a grocery store 5 minutes away, so you can shop and cook meals in the unit if you want, or explore the many (expensive) restaurants in the area.

The staff seemed somewhat inexperienced - although they tried to be helpful (difficulty giving directions to places that were nearby, for example). They didn't always answer the phone - even for incoming outside calls which was a little frustrating (people who were trying to reach us couldn't get through for an hour one day). The other thing that was a little weird was that there were no washers/dryers in the unit, but they did have a laundry room with 3 w/ds and one morning when we went to do laundry, the cleaning staff was using all of the machines to do their personal laundry.

The pools were nice and clean - indoor and outdoor, which was nice if you wanted to avoid some sun exposure.

The unit itself was pretty modern and clean. It had central a/c which was really nice, given how hot it was when we were there!

The location is good, although you aren't really near much of a view - it's across from the commercial wharf, but you are a block from the main street in Newport where there are shops, restaurants, etc.

There is a baseball stadium one block away which hosts a collegiate baseball league - we had a ball at a game one night - it's a truly old fashioned "Field of Dreams" kind of stadium.

There is a shortage of luggage carts to use to transport your luggage from your car to your room - there is no available assistance, so you have to do it yourself - and when we were checking out, it was basically "yeah, we don't have that many carts and there are 63 families all trying to check out at the same time."

One of our toilets broke while we were there (there were 2 bathrooms) and even after we called, no one came to fix it. Happily, it was something my handy husband was able to fix himself, but it seemed kind of ridiculous to have to do that.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay, but I'm not sure it would be worth the high prices they charge (we traded our timeshare for the week, so it didn't really cost us that much).
