My fiance and I took a spontaneous day trip to Newport last spring and had such a good time that we decided to spend the night. We hadn't made any reservations, but got a recommendation to call the Francis Malbone House. We were so glad we did because it was a lovely surprise stay.
The staff made us feel right at home and gave us some amenities (toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.) that we hadn't brought with us. They were great with recommendations on where to eat, how to get to the Newport Mansions, and what to do the next day. Zelda's is a fantastic dinner spot, a close walk from the inn with excellent food. There are some other good restaurants on Thames Street, it just depends what you're in the mood for. Leave room for ice cream--many good shops are in the area!
The next morning we enjoyed the wonderful breakfast buffet before heading out. Everything was homemade and tasted great, from the coffee to the French toast, fresh fruit, and granola. The newspapers in the drawing rooms were also a nice touch. I sat and had a cup of coffee and read before eating.
This is a charming historic inn that has character, but has been very well maintained. The room did not feel "old" or musty at all--on the contrary, it was immaculate and well kept. The bathroom included a jacuzzi-sized tub, which was a nice addition.
Whether you find yourself "stranded" in Newport, or are planning a trip there, this is a wonderful place to call home for a few nights. The staff go out of their way to make sure you want to return someday!
