We loved our stay at the Melville House Inn. The room was lovely, with our own bath. The street is quiet. There's off-street parking, very important in Newport. The breakfasts are to die for. You won't need lunch. And the hosts are charming. Bob knows all about the history of the house and others on the quaint street. We plan to stay there again.
My husband and I just got back from staying at the Melville house in Newport, RI this past weekend and had a wonderful time! The historical house was so quaint and lovely...it truly was a relaxing getaway. The innkeepers, Priscilla and Bob were so hospitable and made the best breakfasts and afternoon treats. Even if you are having a busy day around town, be sure to stop back at the house around 4:00 when Priscilla puts out her amazing cookies...we had oatmeal raisin and chocolate chip!! Along with treats for the guests, they also have drinks and water available in the throughout the day. The rooms are small, but sooo cute! Don't expect a t.v. or phone in any of the rooms...but for a romantic getaway, you don't need them!! The innkeepers have made each room distinct and have added personal touches throughout....
The house is less than a block from town, so it's convenient to everything...no need to drive at all! Depending on how much you like to walk, you may want to drive to the mansions, which are about 1-2 miles away on Bellevue Avenue. And Easton Beach is about a 1-1/2 miles away (If you walk, you beat the $10 parking fee). If you haven't been before, you have to check out The Breakers...what an amazing place!
Definitely make time to do the Cliff Walk, which borders along all the BIG mansions and the ocean. It's about 3-1/2 miles long strecthing from Easton Beach to the southern end of Bellevue Avenue.
If you have time, try and take a cruise in Newport Harbor. There are about 3 or 4 different companies that gave various narrated tours...we took the Amazing Grace, which was $11 a person for an hour.
Melville House is a wonderful, centrally located bed and breakfast for a weekend retreat or a long, relaxing week's vacation!! Can't wait to return!
