My wife and I had our best vacation ever and our stay at the Samuel Durfee house helped immensely in that regard. Innkeeper Heather is very helpful and friendly and gave use lots of good advice on restaurants and activities in Newport. You do not want to miss the absolutely divine breakfasts - their french toast is scrumptious! Breakfasts are served in a nicely appointed dining room and there is also a nice sitting area with a large TV and a refrigerator and table with snacks and drinks. We stayed in the Durfee room which faces the front of the house. I've noted other reviews that included complaints about traffic noise, but traffic during the night is very minimal and we had absolutely no problem getting a good night's sleep. The room itself was large and the bed was very comfortable. The room included several thoughtful details such as a vanity, ringpost, bathrobes, beach towels and wineglasses, among other things. The inn has it's own large, private parking area which is a huge plus for this area. The inn is within easy walking distance of the many restaurants and shops located on the Thames St. waterfront. More seasoned walkers could also reach the Bellevue mansions by foot as well.
We had to leave before breakfast on our last day there and we were given some fruit and muffins to go! It's this kind of thoughtfulness and attention to detail that puts this B&B in a class by itself!
P.S. If your visit to Newport will include a visit to the Doris Duke mansion, Rough Point, be sure to talk to Heather before visiting there.
