“Great Location, OK Hotel”

Hotel Viking

You cannot beat the location of this hotel. It is in the heart of Newport and there are a lot of things to do with in walking distance of the hotel. Give the "Brick Alley Pub" a try for lunch and "The Mooring" for dinner. The cliff walk is a MUST before you leave Newport.

We were NOT pleased with the $22.00 a day just to self-park our car. Come to find out that we didnt have to pay that amount and we could have just parked a few blocks away.

Don't let the interior of the hotel fool you. Yes, the hotel itself is beautiful but the rooms are small and nothing to write home about. We paid $269.00 a night., a total rip off. Our view was the parking lot and the people above us were so loud. It was suppose to be a romantice getaway for my boyfriend and I but I wouldn't dare to stay there again.

Housekeeping took forever too. Our room was not cleaned until 6 PM that night. We just so happen to be walking back to our room from sightseeing and they were just leaving our room.

I guess I should stop writing now since I don't have much to type other than this over-crowded hotel is def. over-rated. Stay at a local bed & breakfast instead. I am not a stuck-up person by any means but I did expect a whole lot more.

“Nice location”

Hotel Viking

1 May 2008

The Viking is centrally located in downtown Newport. Once checked in we were able to walk to breakfast, dinner and some shopping along the waterfront. They have sufficient parking, but it is $22 per night. Helpful valets were at the door to assit with bags and parking. The front desk staff was efficient and friendly. This hotel has been modernized over the years and so the rooms vary. We stayed in what I would call the motel wing. Our room featured two queen beds and a large wall of windows. The bathroom was divided into two room on wither side of the hotel room. One had a toilet and tub, the other a closet, vanity area and lighted mirror. The vanity side is more of an alcove and had no door, so you were exposed when brushing your teeth or applying make-up.
The beds were comfortable and they provided extra pillows which was nice touch. A large armoire hid a small TV. Overall the room was above average, but rather small. It was very clean and well maintained.
The pool area was large and very rarely used. While we were there they closed the jacuzzi because the chemical mix was off. It did not open the next day and then we left. We were disappointed.
We did not eat at the hotel restaurant because it was very expensive, especially for kids. The breakfast buffet was $17.
All staff were professional and helpful. The free coffee in the lobby was fresh and well made. There were free apples in a basket at the front desk. For the money, it was a good value and we would stay there again.

Note that we've only stayed here off season so the summer experience may differ from ours. This is our 3rd year coming and we'll be back again!

Wonderful old world hotel but with modern touchs. Great value. 5 star service from the staff (although we have noticed a small slip over our 3 years of visits in staff attitude). Fantastic food and wine. We love to park ourselves in the bar, watching a game and drink wine and eat some wonderful bar food (the fresh made potato chips are scrumptious!) Bedding is luxurious and very comfortable. Flat panel TVs and stylish marble baths (although ours was teeny, tiny; no counter space and a glass door that made night trips possibly disturbing to your sleeping companion) The spa is one of the best we've ever experienced. Worth the trip alone! They have Balianese as well as Thai massage that is hard to find elsewhere and superior to all. The indoor pool/whirlpool is wonderful and relaxing and well maintened. Couldn't ask for a better (and economical) romantic getaway!

Our 25th Anniversary was great. We stayed at the Hotel Viking four nights. This hotel is so pretty, The staff was great also. You will not for a nicer hotel in newport for the money. If you are going to go to newport this is the place to stay. When you look around they did not hesitate about spending money to make this a five star hotel. It is that nice. The only complaint i have is parking. It cost like $12 to park a day we just parked on the side street and just walked a 1/2 block to the hotel which you need to walk after eating all that wonderful seafood. Make sure you do the cliffwalk when you go. Thanks again for making this indiana couple a wonderal 25th anniversary.

“Ok but expected more....”

Hotel Viking

26 Mar 2008

Arriving at the Viking you are in no doubt that you are about to stay at Newport's premier hotel. The attentive valets and professional front of house team ensure that the busy reception runs almost smoothly. However, for the price tag one might have expected a more personal service - this appears to be compromised by the staff having to focus attention primarily on the numerous (high end) wedding parties. We had a standard room which was opulently furnished but extremely small with noisy and inadequate air conditioning. The bar area is very comfortable and the hotel is fairly centrally located. Nothing to complain about - nice to have stayed here but expected more for the circa $400 per night price-tag. Next time I would leave this place to the mega-bucks and stay at a nice upmarket B&B.
