just got back from Oahu not a "reviewer" so to speak but feel compelled to spend the time... went for the Pro Bowl and to see my 11 and 13 year old through surf lessons. I did some research on the 'net but as usual you never know. Had some probs connecting with sunset suzy although seemed a good experience... ended up at the hotel and asked the concierge (unnamed to protect him for his honesty) He advised try Hawaiiian fire "I know those guys and am a surfer myself"'nuff said!.... you must understand "the village" has two schools to sell but we were pointed elsewhere???? this is why you pay the concierge a nice tip! Hawaiian fire van driven by Noah shows up bright and early and from his early morning energy you get a feeling this will be good time. Some probs with the transpo cause other students not at pick up point.... no worries he goes back for them... this is a sign who you are dealing with.... most attractions see this as a bonus and take the money and run! We get to the beach +/- 30 mins from Waikiki (Barbers Point) full experience of Hawaiian surf complete with muddy road to the beach and Locals fireing up the barbecues...kind of got me concerned because this is the time in movies where the locals pound the mainlanders (Blue Crush) for even contemplating going near their hallowed grounds. We drive through the trees to find a cool set up on the beach with multiple equipment trucks and canopies and such..again a good sign a company that is willing to put something ($) into their presentation. In the water quick not a drawn out on beach experience exactly what you need and lets go do this! multiple instructors in the water calling for you to paddle out to them and go again. this is big given the other experience...with HF you will get as many waves as you can paddle to an instructor for.... and the waves at their location just keep rolling! The instructors in the water not exactly sure of names Chessa? and Ashley? were incredible with the kids very supportive and kept them energized... I should mention the instructors were noticeably uncomfortable in the water that was apparently colder than usual. So even with their teeth chattering they were exceptional. Mark and Joe who did the on shore were very cordial and relieved any intimidation that one would feel taking on this adventure. After that great experience we spend a few days at the hotel and the kids obviously want to surf again so we do the Hawaiian hot spots lesson simply because I was uncomfortable at this point just renting boards and heading out..... Waikiki Beach is no place to take a lesson!!!!!!! The surf is awesome and to say you surfed there may be worth it and the wave can take you a great distance further tha the HF location BUT..... if you want to spend $90 for the opportunity to catch 4 waves go for it its your dough I considered the experience a waste catch a wave paddle back and sit for twenty minutes while the instructors have a tough time finding a good wave and staying out of the way of their surfer bro's. aside from Errol Kane at Hawaiian Hot Spots the professionalism and overall experience had with "the fire guys" at Hawaiian Fire blew HHS out of the water! So I highly recommend them! but be careful if you have teenagers or pre-teens they may just talk about the dreamy Hawaiian girl who taught them to surf the rest of the vacation!
Hats off to the Hawaiian Fire crew for what they do in their day jobs and their play jobs.
