The reason we came to International Falls was the Voyageurs National Park, and the reason we picked the Hilltop Motel were the favorable reviews, the reasonable rates, and the fact that the arrangement included breakfast.
Voyageurs NP definitely is worth a visit. You need to go aboard a boat, though. We recommend the tours offered through the park’s visitor centers. The town of International Falls on the other hand is a nice enough place for activities like going to the movies, having a decent dinner and shop for a souvenir or two.
The Hilltop Motel is a good place for the night. The room we had was spacious, clean and quiet. The interior didn’t match our taste, but it was a welcoming departure from the pre-fabricated chain motels. The only disappointment was the breakfast.
It seems that if you put the word “continental” first you can get away with serving a chunk of playground sand and call it a breakfast. What the Hilltop Motel served for breakfast was better than playground sand, but only just. We wish they hadn’t advertised it. Or better to say, we wish they would have served what they advertise, ‘cause on their web site things look much better than what we actually saw and experienced.
We forget about the breakfast and keep the Hilltop Motel in our memories as the place where we had a good night sleep in International Falls.

In response to fossilize, Houston, Texas. We at the Hilltop have designed a unique theme for each and every room or cabin to give a real homestyle look that is non-generic as so many other motels. The theme in your room was like no other with wolf bordering and a northwoods touch including lampshades and northern lites art, which would not be common to Texas. New air conditioning and study desk as well is always a nice touch. Dark blue bed spreads with diamond designs on our queen and double beds were not shown in your picture. Our continental breakfast would be what most would not expect, ranging from freshly baked carmel and cinnamon rolls, homebaked donuts with maple, almond, butterscotch frosting to name a few. Rhubarb coffee cake in season, along with lemon, and cinnamon struesel. Many different kinds of muffins, including blueberry. Banana and zucchini bread are also favorites here. These are all items you won't find at most motels and are different each day. We offer different blends of coffee, fresh apple or orange juice with packaged energy bars as well. We have had many pleased guests having seconds or more of the homebaked pastries. We have never had any of our items described as playground sand. If you are ever here again, we do take special requests as well on any of our homebaked pastries. We are pleased you did enjoy your sparkling, spacious accomodations. Thank You, Richard at the Hilltop, International Falls, MN
