The Trip Advisor reviews entised us to Colomba hotel but we found it inappropriate for us who spoke only English. A Trip Advisor reviewer in July 2009 found a front desk lady there who spoke fluent English - she is obviously long gone. In checking in we were told in a few memorized words, "no one here speaks English - go to the Tourist Bureau, they speak English". This included the owner and his son who we saw frequently in our 5 days and were very friendly, basically a nice family owned and operated hotel. And we found that none of the 5 employees at the Tourist Bureau spoke more than halting broken English and could not communicate much in response to our questions. So it was a bit better than the hotel staff which could not respond in any way to our questions or needs. The room was OK - no complaint. The room rate was only 110 Euros - a good value. The location on a narrow street was perfect, near the center of the "upper city" but half a block away from the noise. Breakfast was 10 Euros but we didn't try it because of the bad experience we had for dinner the first night with "plates" containing about 10 different foods which did not compliment each other and most of which we didn't like. The big problem was that they cost 20+ Euros each, we ordered one plate each and received two each creating a costly 100 Euro dinner - even with a communication problem they clearly took us to the cleaners and we believe purposely took advantage of our naivete.
Do visit Bonifacio, it has a spectacular setting. Stay away from the heaviest tourist season, even April was overwelmed with tourists - summer would be impossible. Do find a hotel with someone who speaks fluent English (if you are only English speaking) but don't rely on an English reply to your pretrip email inquiries.
