Off to spend the day snorkeling with Capt Bill and Ingrid of the Erin Go Bragh III. Set the GPS (we brought from home) for Puerto del Rey and 25 minutes later we were in Fajardo and found the boat. Bill and Ingrid were pleasant , friendly and knowledgeable and were great hosts. Due to one of the guests already having been to one of the offshore islands before Capt Bill asked if we’d like to go to Vieques instead and we all agreed so off we went on a bigger adventure than we expected or paid for – all because the Capt wanted to be accommodating to his guests. Due to the Christmas winds, we made a quick passage to Vieques. Capt Bill easily turned over control of the wheel to whomever wanted it and gave us a chance to feel the power of a 50’ ketch under sail in 20-30 knot winds – quite an experience. We then snorkeled for several hours, had a great lunch (chicken and ribs) barbequed on the boat along with salads and bread, thirst quenched by all you can drink sodas, fruit juices with or without rum. Then headed back for a late afternoon sail back to the mainland, more drinks and fresh fruit were served before reaching the dock at about 6pm. All in all a great day. Snorkeling off Vieques was quite good we encountered stingrays, puffer fish, trunk fish, squid, blue tangs, red snapper, blue runners, and starfish to name a few. The western tip of Vieques where we stopped had a particularly good grouping of soft corals with many colors of sea fans, etc. All in all a great trip well worth the $89 tab.
