“About as far from Magaluf as you could want to be”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2009

Let's face it - if you want greasy fish and chips and pints of John Smiths, this is probably not the place for you. But if you want delicious, imaginative food and some of Mallorca's best wines served up in a beautiful courtyard in this attractive, arty little town in the far north east of the island then you could not do better.

Having heard about the restaurant, we had planned a day's outing - a visit to the beach followed by an early supper. Unfortunately, we had just arrived in Arta when our xcar broke down. It might have been a disastrous day but Vanessa, the restaurant's proprietor - from Britain via Germany - came to rescue - first with a chilled glass of Chardonnay; then with her fluent Spanish she gave directions to the car hire company; then she opened up her pool room for our bored children; and finally served us certainly the best meal I've had in Menorca and one of the best meals ever! The restaurant is very much Vanessa's passion and you can feel it in the quality of the service.

when we were there they weren't serving lunch but worth checking. Vanessa told me they have plans to open rooms - I hope they do because it would make a lovely base for exploring this part of the island.

“A wonderful assault on the senses!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2009

La Calatrava impressed me from the outset. My party were all reminiscing about the wonderful food, delicious wine and outstanding service throughout the remainder of our holiday. The previous reviews capture the gastronomic excellence rightly enough, however the chef's amuse bouche leaves you in no doubt from the start that the rest of the meal will be stunning.
The property has been restored with an eye for detail without being pretentious. Little quirks such as the sculpted sheep residing in the courtyard lets one know that it is not a stuffy environment, simply a beautiful one in which to enjoy food, wine and company.
This was clearly a multinational feeling as there was warm laughter and smiles throughout the restaurant.
Well done Vanessa and a special thank you to all of your staff. I look forward to a return visit.

“Venue-sublime, welcome-wonderful, food-delightful.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2009

If you are reading this you have the opportunity to go to this; do NOT miss this opportunity. The rightfully proud owner of this spot is a Scottish/German lady called Vanessa, if you are unlucky she won't be there to ask after you, normally she is there to make you feel special. As for the building, so much to say, personally I can't help but love the courtyard which radiates love and attention through it's old and manicured vines, flowers and trees. The menu is a delight, pure and simply. From our experience: the fish and meat are cooked perfectly, the risotto was cooked to an old Italian chefs standards, the cheese was strong, bread divine, and the wine flowed. If you're lucky Vanessa will invite you to share some of the home made limoncello; if you're lucky. You have this address, use it!

“A real gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2009

Nestled in a side street in the beautiful town of Arta, La Calatrava offers an escape from the bustle of Mallorcan life. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, with well informed staff and a lovely welcome from the host, Vanessa ( and of course Hugo!). The courtyard is a delight and a wonderful place from which to escape the heat of the day with a cool drink.
The food was stunning; the use of fresh local ingredients ranges from the wonderful fish with local wild asparagus through to the excellent steaks. The menu is carefully balanced and varied - so delicious it's hard to resist the tempation to taste from the plate of your partner! This is serious cooking here! English is spoken and the staff are only too ready to help advise with your wine selection. This is dining at it's best, but in a relaxed and welcoming setting. A real gem!
