Went for a week with Riviera Travel.
Had a 4th floor room with lake view and small balcony. We paid extra for this. The room was modern, clean, and completely adequate for the limited amount of time we spent there. The view is, of course, spectacular over the lake to the snow covered lower Alps. We weren't troubled by any noise from the busy-ish lakeside road. There are plenty of sun terraces outside with the same view as from the room.
It might be possible to be critical of the dining room on the 5th floor. I can see how some may find it haphazard. Sometimes the food does run out on the self service 1st and final courses and there is a wait for a replacement. I think it's a minor issue, others will disagree.
The food is fine, the staff work very hard and are always pleasant. The Maitre D will organise a table for 6 or 8 if you want one, It is possible to dine outside if you wish on warm days. It's not an intimate candlelit dinner for 2, but otherwise it's very good. The wine at €19 and water at €4 will soon add up if you drink a bottle a night as we did, but you can save a part bottle of wine for the next night if you wish. The same wine is available in an adjoining shop for €10.
The bar is good with a wide selection of drinks. The coffee in the bar is much better than at breakfast where frankly. it's the worst I have ever tasted in Italy. Waiter service is efficient and friendly. There are tables outside for warm evenings where you can smoke if you wish. Inside the bar, there is an occasional piano player which I found intrusive after a while, others may disagree. There is no other entertainment provided by the hotel.
3 lifts are provided. These can sometimes seem to have a mind of their own, but in reality, this is usually down to a lot of guests' failure to understand how they work. Reception is fine and helpful and the downstairs rooms are very grand with some comfortable seating.
There are 2/3 local bars, a newsagents, post office, bus ticket shop, and a few other shops in easy reach of the hotel. The car ferry and passenger ferry are within 5 mins either side of the hotel. The bus stop is right outside the door. Other than that the hotel is a bit isolated, not being in a town or village.
Our experience was v. good/excellent, and the holiday overall was superb. Of course, if you are arriving in a Ferrari, Bentley etc, or a private transfer in an upmarket Riva speedboat you may find the hotel a bit lacking in the usual refinements.
For us, it was just fine, and I would recommend it without hesitation
A lake view room will cost extra, but it's worth it.
