My self and my partner have just returned from a lovely week( 6th to 13th September) at this superb resort and what follows is an honest review from a very satisfied holiday maker and I felt I had to write this review to share my experiences.
First and foremost, Mr Victor Gill (the Manager) should be very proud to oversee such a beautiful place, and be congradulated on the friendliness and efficiency of his staff.
I emailed Mr Gill a week before we arrived with a special request and my requirements were met in full. Muchos Gracias again Victor.Ehn khan ta doh Seniore.
A lovely area, which although not grand, is lovely and functional and reflects the ambience of this hotel.
Highly efficient check in process and very pleasent and helpful staff. All we encountered were great. Unfortunately I only remember Fernando, but all should be congradulated for their "service with a smile"
We were allocated room 6005 above reception and the decked bar area. This was a beautiful room with a full view of the resort from the pools down to the sea and the view was similar to the main picture of the resort you see on the website. The room was spotlessly clean and contained a whirlpool tub, separate rain shower, his and hers sinks, separate toilet, two large very comfortable king size beds, a sofa, and a quite large balcony with quality furniture. The air conditioning in the rooms is fantastically efficient and was like a fridge upon returning from the heat of the day. This is individually controllable. All rooms are of this standard, although ours was a full sea view, and are exactly as pictured and described on the hotel website.
We had no maintenance issues with our room. I have read a recent review which mentions a maintenance issue with a shower and that it was not fixed. If something does not get repaired the first time you request it to be, just keep asking and it will be so. Be patient and remember that the hotels maintenance crews have to service all rooms, not just yours.
Unfortunately I did not catch our maids name but she made sure our room was spotlessly clean every day, floors washed, beds made etc, so thank you. I left a tip for her on the last day of our stay, and whilst it was only 20 Euros, it showed our appreciation. Please leave a small tip for the Maids/ Cleaning staff as these are the "unsung heroines" of this resort.
Beutifully maintained and spotlessly clean. We have been to quite a few 5 star resorts in the Caribbean, including "The Excellence Riviera Cancun", and the qualtiy of cleanliness in this resort is comparable, if not better, than some other 5 star resorts we have stayed in. The public toilets are fantastically clean (check out the one near reception with the great ceramic red bowls) including the ones by the pools. Congratulations again to the cleaning staff.
There are 8 of these. There is no beach to speak of and what there is is very rocky and unsuitable for swimming/ sunbathing
We stayed around the Adults Only pool at the top of the complex which was lovely and quiet. Plenty of sunbeds for everybody so no need at all to reserve any although there were the usual culprits who did this. Please remember, you only reserve your habitation for 1 or 2 weeks. What you pay for your holiday does not entitle you to reserve the same sunbed every day !! The pools are cleaned every day and freaquent checks of the water quality are carried out so I dont think you need to worry at all about any nasty viruses in the water. Someone mentioned the lack of Pool Towels and having to walk a little way to get them in a recent review. Well, I dont know what resort they were staying in but it certainly wasn't this one as there were plenty of pool towels available and if you needed a new one you only had to either ask at reception or leave the old ones in your bath tub and the maid would replenish your towels. We asked her directly one morning and she gave us some more immediately.
The food qualtiy and variety of food is exceptional. The main buffet retaurant, where all meals are taken, is fabulous. The restaurant has been designed in such a way that you do not feel you are in a large restaurant as there are various "pods", or sections, where you can sit and enjoy your meal. There are 4 or 5 show cooking sections where a variety of freshly prepared food is cooked in front of you. Food is freaquently changed with fresh supplies and all buffett stations are temperature regulated. The variety available to you is astounding really and includes at least 4 types of fish everyday, both at lunch and dinner, and all very good indeed. The usual things are on offer such as freshly made pizza, delicious pasta, meats, the best paella I have ever tasted, hamburgers freshly cooked, great chips, beautiful salads, smoked salmon, muscles, lovely puddings and fresh fruit. Breakfasts are a treat with freshly cooked omelettes, fried, scrambled and boiled eggs, sausages bacon, cereals, cheeses, meats yoghurts and fresh fruit of all varieties. The list could go on and on.
If you cannot find anything you like to eat at this resort, or like one recent reviewer who found the food repetative?, then you really should stay at home and not bother leaving the UK as there is something for everyone here. The A la Carte meal which you are entitled to during your stay is exceptional, and for what myself and my partner ate that particular night, and having drunk 2 bottles of wine with it, would have cost at least £40-50 each in the UK . If you consider yourself a Gourmet Diner, then the food here will not meet your expectaions but then you would have to pay 3 or 4 times more for your vacation to get that quailty, however this is some of the best all inclusive food I have eaten and easily compares with some top quality hotels in the Caribbean.
The all incluusive package does include some major premium brands such as Gordens Gin, Smirnoff Vodka etc. If the bar staff do pour you a local brand drink ( which is just as good) simply ask them for a premium brand. The beer is a local Canarian brand which is very good and similar in taste and strength to San Miguel. There are lists at all the bars telling you what drinks are included in your package and those that are not so its a good idea to look at that first. For those who like Baileys, the included Whiskey Cream local drink is just as good.
The wines for this standard all inclusive are of superb quality really. All are Rioja's, red, white, and rose and quite frankly it is not worth paying for upgraded wines anywhere as these are so good and very drinkable. I have good quality Rioja's at home all the time and the red is easily comparable to a £10 bottle that you may pick up in Tescos etc. For those who like Pino Grigio, which includes my other half and myself, the white Rioja is just as good.
The lobby bar near reception is a nice place to sit in the evening and have a drink before dinner.
Some people in previous reviews have mentioned that their glass was not refilled automatically by the waiting staff in the restaurants! All you have to do is catch their attention and ask them politely for another and they will fetch you some more wine! There is no restriction to the amount of this good wine you can drink either and I have on numerous occasions taken a bottle for the restaurant to the seating area outside to watch the entertainment. Please try and remember that the waiting staff are very busy trying to please and help everybody, so if the service is a little slow then its to be expected. Anyway, whats the rush, you are on vacation so chill out, relax and enjoy the experience in this lovely quality resort.
The all inclusive drinks programme starts at 8am and finishes at 11pm. After this time your drinks are chargable to your room. Whilst I am on this subject the ONLY critisisum of this resort is that Room Service is chargable at any time during those hours( unless i read the room service details incorrectly as I only used it once) which does not seem logical to me as you can order say 2 or 3 drinks at 10.50 for free and take them to your room to drink on your balcony although if you order room service for the same drinks, they are chargable?
However I think the main reason this is is not a 24 hr free AI resort is to perhaps discourage excessive drinking and noise which would afterall spoil the ambience of thiis resort and peoples enjoyment. However you can drink as much as you like during the hours I have mentioned, including a good quality Cava at any time, even at breakfast. Please do not get me wrong as I am certainly not a heavy drinker by any means, but I do of course appreciate what I drink and at what times. However this is not really the place for binge drinking sessions and thankfully so.
All staff we personally came into contact with here are great and are excellent representaives of the Hotel. I wish I had a big list of names but I do not, but needless to say all should be recommended. The names I do remember are Angel in the pool bar, who always served everybody efficiently and with a smile, and Irinia and in the Gomera "pod" who had a most lovely smile for us everytime. She is a lovely waitress and looked after us very well and certainly made sure our wine glasses were replenished when requested. There was also another girl with blonde hair who served us and she was lovely too but unfortunately I didnt get her name.
Just a note regarding communication with the staff. Try to speak a little Spanish, even if it is just a polite Hola, or Buenos Dias,Buenos Noches, and Gracias, or Como es ta? as it is appreciated and I think respectful to try to learn and speak just a few words.
All staff speak and undersatnd English, so why not return the compliment. There are plenty of internet sites where you can download selected phrases so why not give it a go!!!
Whilst mentioning staff, the cooks/ chefs and general staff in the restaurants should also be highly praised for providing such high quality food.
What entertainment we saw was good. Yes some was a little cheesey but hey thats entertainment. It does finish at 11 but that is legislation, not the hotel policy.
Enjoy what you see but dont expect Las Vegas syle shows or acts, and you wont be disappointed. Just sit back with a Rioja, a Gordens and Tonic or a beer and Enjoy!!!
The Environmental Reserve.
This is within the ground of the Hotel and is the reason the resort has been designed as it has. There are tours organised of the reserve and I highly recommend this as it was the best use of 7.50 euros ever. You just have to enquire at reception. The tour lasts approx 2- 2.5 hours and starts with an interactive volcanic experience. I shall say no more, but please take a couple of hours off your sunbed to do this as it is well worth the experience to take a guided tour of the volcanic landscape and beautiful hidden vally( with lake) around the hotel.
Apparently the lake has 25kilo+ Carp in it but you cannot fish for them. Shame, as I would loved to have fished for carp there. So quiet and peaceful but I fully understand of course why fishing is not allowed and I would not have wanted to dispurb the peace of the place as even the splash of a bait going in the water would have disturbed the peace of the place.
To Sum Up
Sorry for the length of this review, but I hope it will help you have a wonderful time at the Sandos San Blas, Tenerife.
This is a fantastic place to spend your vacation if you want to come home absolutely chilled and refreshed. As quite a few other reviewers have said, it is not the place for clubbers or drunken revellers as for that there are other resorts on the Island. This is a quality resort which highly deserves its 5 star status. It is beautifully designed and maintained to the highest standards and credit should also go to the groundsman and everyone concerned for this who keep this place spotless.
All in all this was a fantastic holiday experience in a fantastic place which exceeded our expectations. I am sure if you visit this resort you will not be disappointed. If you are the type of person who likes to find fault everywhere you go, then you will not find anything to complain about here. If you simply want to complain then save your money and stay at home.
I just wish we had stayed for 2 weeks. Still there is always next year so we are looking forward to a return visit already and although the world is a big place with so many other places to see, I would not hesitate to return or recommend this place to others.
If you require any further info please feel free to ask me.
