We've just returned from a weeks stay at Luna Alvor Bay. Generally was great and would recommend to all.
Just a few things to pass on -On arrival (just after midnight). Staff on the reception desk not very welcoming- suppose it was late so didn't put us off. I had been worrying about arriving at the hotel as had expected something to go wrong. When holiday booked originally through Travel Republic a mistake was made and we were given a land view rather than a seaview as paid for. So the booking had to be cancelled and re-made. On arrival as suspected the re-booking hadn't registered, however after much discussion amongst the two staff, a room was found. It took a while to sort out but it didn't seem to be any trouble to them at all really. We were given a sea view room, on the 3rd floor, have to admit not as nice as the pics I've seen of the higher floor views but a welcomed seaview all the same. When in our room the safe was broken. The rather unfriendly little man who peered down his glasses at us came from reception and tried to fix it but couldn't. However in the morning we went back to reception to a much friendlier member of staff who sent the 'handyman' who fixed it within half an hour. Really good.
We didn't use the bar, pool area or eat at the hotel as it's so close to the beach and town there's too much too see outside to spend too much time there. Rooms best equiped self catering I've ever stayed at. Really clean too. As others have said, take dishwasher tabs and washing up liquid/cloth. Otherwise all there. Bed was too hard for me but added a couple of the blankets over the mattress and it was much softer. Don't be late checking out though- our transfer was due to collect us at 12.30 and checkout is 12 midday ( as far as I found out on the website as there was no hotel info in our room at all!) We were ready to leave our room a little late at 12.15 and the phone was ringing and there was a very unfriendly woman standing outside the door with a mobile in her hand who just scowled at us as we left!
Pingo Doce supermarket not too far away good for essentials at cheaper price and more choice than Alisuper. Best restaurant we went to was Georgettes. Lovely food and Georgette herself greets all her customers as old friends, so welcoming, a must to visit for anyone, caters for all tastes really but good local food.
The main Alvor street is great for people watching from the bars or restaurants but most of the restaurants away from the main street are better. We really wanted to try Ruccula, lots on tripadvisor had suggested it was lovely, even tried to book ahead but was fully booked for a week! Must be good, but never got to try so suggest booking on the day you arrive if you only have a week.
Overall, great self catering accomodation, Alvor is lovely, beach is fantastic, so relaxed and friendly.
Ask for higher floors(There's 12 so the higher up the better view) for a better seaview when boo...
