I stayed at this hotel towards the end of May for one week with a friend. We are in our late 20’s – early 30’s - I state this as therefore this review may well be relevant to people of a similar age group. The average age of the hotel guests must have been mid 60’s if not older. Whilst this was not a problem, it may be for people looking to have more of a party type holiday – we got some funny looks when we came home at 5am from being out – I don’t think the staff are used to it.
The hotel itself is a bit of an eyesore – a large looming concrete lump. Inside, the hotel is pleasant and is spotlessly clean. Check in was very straightforward and our room which was on the third floor was obviously quite newly decorated but was a little on the small side. The room was equipped with a tv (about 18 channels, a mixture of German, Spanish and Italian with the English speaking channels being BBC world, Eurosport and Sky news), two large comfortable single beds, lots of wardrobe and cupboard space, a tastefully furnished bathroom and a balcony with a plastic table and chairs. There was also a fridge which was very handy. We overlooked the pool.
The food at dinner was hit or miss to say the least. I’m not a fan of half board, particularly when it involves a buffet but I am not a fussy eater by any stretch of the imagination. There was a big salad selection every night with a choice of gazpacho or a hot soup. Mains seemed to involve a lot of veal (we assumed this is a Germanic thing?), a pasta dish, chips and lots of brussel sprouts! The deserts were awful, I gave up after eating one which had not been thawed properly and went for cheese and biscuits instead. It seemed a shame to me that there weren’t more Spanish dishes on the menu and that instead the food was more geared towards pleasing the British and German palates. On the upside, there is a good selection of Spanish wines, some available by the half bottle.
Breakfast was much better – decent coffee, selection of herbal teas, fruit, dried fruit, yoghurts, different breads, eggs/bacon/sausage etc and a selection of pastries. Breakfast is also served until 10am, which was nice.
Hotel amenities – the outside pool is quite large but in May was freezing cold. I would imagine that in high season guests would be fighting over the sunbeds. We only spent on day by the pool and didn’t really enjoy it – it was packed out but there was a very subdued atmosphere so instead we headed to one of the beaches in Santa Eulalia. There is a gym full of really worn out equipment and an indoor pool and there is also a Jacuzzi and steam room.
Entertainment – shockingly bad. We only saw one night as it was raining so hard we didn’t want to walk down to the marina. There is a chap there who seems to do a lot of different jobs and one of them is being the chief entertainer. The night we were in the lounge we were speaking to a couple we met there and got told off by another guest as apparently we were interrupting the bingo! After the bingo, the entertainment guy proceeded to mime to Enrique Englesias songs. If you are after a hotel with good entertainment we were told by a few people that the hotel next door (possible called the cala setanques or such like) had much better quality performances. On another note, the bar staff were very nice but do not seem to have a clue how to make cocktails, confusing lemons with limes etc, not having any mint.
I know that this seems like a really bad review but one thing I can say is that we had a really good time. The location of the hotel is perfect – Santa Eulalia is absolutely gorgeous and is just a 5 minute walk away. On other posts I have read people referring to being unhappy with having to take a short cut ‘through the woods’ – the woods are basically a car park with some pine trees in them and we never felt vulnerable. If you don’t want to take the short cut, the long was round only adds about 2 minutes the journey time. There is a lovely Marina which has some nice restaurants – our favourite was the Café Sidney. There was also a great café, whose name I can’t remember but it is next door to the Chinese restaurant, also on the marina. The town has some great shops – much better than Ibiza Town we thought, and there are loads of shoe shops! Once you walk past the marina there are two stretches of beaches – we preferred the one at the far end where you can rent a sun bed from the ‘4 pinos’, a restaurant. I think the charge was 3.50 for each bed. There is a great ice cream parlour along the front called ‘Miramar’; the ice cream was so good we went back about 4 times.
If you’re staying at the hotel and want to go out for some provisions there is a Spar not far away – if you walk down onto the marina and go past the café Sidney on your right, look up and there is a Spar logo flag so you can locate it. A bigger supermarket is the Eroski which you will find if you walk up to the main road in Santa Eulalia and follow it away from the hotel, just past the petrol station. This is only about 15 mins from the hotel.
A final word on the much commented about thin walls – we didn’t notice this at first as we only had one neighbour. Then we had a new neighbour and we could hear them snore and cough as if they were in our room. We got off lightly as some people were next door to children and had a real time of it. I’d advise taking ear plugs!
