We celebrated our 30th Anniversary at La Ferriera. The Tuscan charm and hospitality was all that we hoped for. This is a family owned and operated hotel in a really cool renovated mill. Our private room was spacious and had architectural appeal with exposed beams and shuttered windows. A nice kitchen with French doors to coved balcony overlooked the river, waterfall and peaceful forest. For $300 euro each a breakfast was provided with awesome espresso, fresh juice, pastry and excellent granola along with many others. (We would only recommend to the staff for hot scrambled eggs). Our thanks to the chef's for their beautifully planned 4 course meals with multiple options, one night they brought in a award winning winery with expert sommelier and fabulous wine! We looked forward to each night after a full day driving in the region to this hospitality and the other wonderful guests that we were privileged to meet during our stay. We highly recommend renting a car to get here, it's only an our south of Florence and easy day trips to Arezzo, Orvieto, Siena, Montepluchiano and of course the beautiful Chianti region. We are so grateful to have had this experience, thanks to Virginia, Thomas, family, waiters, staff for making this a special experience! Scott & Joyce Anderson

My sister and I stayed here October 18-25, 2014. We had a one-bedroom apartment overlooking the front of the property. The apartment had a very nice terrace. Both the living room/kitchen area and the bedroom were very spacious and clean. We checked in on a Saturday. The maids came in on the next Wednesday to replace towels and give the place a quick clean. If we had needed anything, we could ask the front desk. We had asked for more toilet paper several times. They were very happy to help in any way.

We found the half board (300 euros) to be a nice thing. We had a nice buffet breakfast before we left during the days to explore and tour. We had a nice dinner waiting for us when we got back any time between 7:00 - 9:00 pm. We didn't find ourselves rushing to get back to eat - we always seemed to be back by dark and so happy to have the great food waiting for us.

A couple of days, we decided to take a walk into the village and found a kind of street fair in the little parking lot just on the other side of the long driveway into Residence La Ferriera. We had such a good time trying out all the Tuscan specialties in food and wine. The little village is very beautiful.

The best part of La Ferriera is the staff. Virginia at the desk is so helpful and pleasant and all of the staff in the restaurant. By the time the week was over, we felt we knew everyone there. They were wonderful.

We had a gps app on our smart phone which helped a lot in finding the place the first day. If we hadn't had that, it may have been difficult to find. The app was called Waze. If you are driving back into Florence to drop off the car after your travels, don't use the gps. Florence is very restrictive regarding driving into the city. We got completely, frustratingly lost trying to find Enterprise. My sister has friends this happened to, also. So beware. Enterprise employees had to drive to us and guide us back to the office. We never would have been able to find it. Careful use of a regular map to start with may have helped. Once we took the wrong bridge in and got lost, it was nearly impossible to navigate, despite several stops asking people for help.

We enjoyed out stay at La Ferriera, staff very attentive, quaint little rooms all made to look authentic as if original. We shared a two bedroom apartment, one room had a nice sized window but the second only had a very high small one which made the room look a bit like a gloomy dungeon.

Very central to all tourist destinations was a bonus and very helpful information at reception.
The only downside was the half board, which as we were booked through RCI we were forced to take. There are 4 courses every evening and if you like LOTS of pasta for nearly all (2 out of 3 nightly courses) dinner meals then this will suit you. Not a lot of meat, just mostly pasta. At 370 euros per person (4 of us - 1,480 euros) was way to much for the value of the food that we got.
We made many friends there as everyone starts their week booking on the Saturday and finishes the following Saturday. We were all sharing our daily ventures over dinner each night.

Fantastic history abounds in all directions, either walking or driving to any of these destinations is always surprising. You will find fascinating little towns, shops and people down winding little cobblestone roads and paths, many still living in their 1000 yr old houses that had Roman armies marching by their front doors a millennia ago.

Room tip: Try to get a room with a window as the lighting was not great in our room. We could not see out our window as it was too high and very small, letting in very little light. No elevators and stairs are narrow and winding. If you have a huge suitcase you will struggle, unless the staff help you.

We had made a timeshare exchange through RCI to book our stay at La Ferriera to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. We were more than pleased with our stay. La Ferriera resides in the tiny Tuscan town of Loro Ciuffenna, in the heart of the Chianti region. We were very happy with the traditional Tuscan setting of our accommodations, the hotel is a former iron works factory set beside a small tumbling waterfall that can be heard from the rooms. Our one bedroom suite was spacious and comfortable, with high ceilings and a small deck overlooking the waterfall. We did the half-board service, and the food was mostly outstanding. The restaurant offers a wide selection of reasonably priced wines of the area, and a wonderful four course selection of homemade regional dishes. We were able to try Bifsteka alla Florentina, from the local Limousine breed of cattle. A simply grilled enormous t-bone steak done perfectly rare was out of this world. Virginia and Claudio were extremely helpful in our daily plans through Tuscany, suggesting various wineries and points of interest in the area. Overall, our stay at La Ferriera was a great highlight of our trip to Italy.

Residence La Ferriera is quaint resort nestled in the village of Loro Ciuffenna which is situated approximately 60km south-east of Florence. Residence La Ferriera can only be reached by car as there is no public transport available from Florence. GPS is a must and patience is required to reach the premises. The small medieval town of Loro Ciuffena is within walking distance. It has a couple of restaurants, convenience stores, pastry shops, etc. and provides most basic shopping requirements.

The building is a restored tool making factory converted into apartments. Our unit, consisting of a large kitchenette/living area and a large separate bedroom, was well equipped and offered the basic necessities to prepare simple meals. Making coffee might be a problem as the unit is not equipped with drip system commonly used in North America. There is a very good restaurant on site and the meals are fantastic. The staff offers good advice and will go out of their way to assist you. There are no elevators and some rooms are on the third floor negotiated by narrow stairs. Assistance may be required to carry heavy luggage to your room.

Florence can be reached by public transport. The Montevarchi train station is a 20 minutes drive by car and the reception desk will give you directions to the free parking area found next to the train station itself. Note that a GPS is recommended in addition to the map given. The train ride from Montevarchi to Florence varies from 40 minutes to 1 hour depending on the train you take. From Loro CIuffenna it is also possible to take a day trip into the Chianti wine making region to visit local wineries. The reception desk will take pride in suggesting places to visit and the roads to use to get there.

The facility offers half-board (breakfast and supper) for a cost. This is probably a good deal for those only visiting the immediate area. Supper is at 19h00 and offers the opportunity of sharing your day's travel with the other guests. They will send you meal to your room if you arrive late. The cost is not worth it for the wandering tourist.

We used the train system to get to Florence and Venice. From here, it was also possible to drive to Pisa and Cinque Terre.

Room tip: You can hear the babbling brook from all rooms.
