This is a wonderful hotel. My only disappointment is in Puerto Rico itself.
1. Hotel location-I was disappointed in the area around this hotel.Lots of American fast food places to eat at and no feel that you were in a different country. Might as well have been in Florida. Fast food joints were great for cheap lunches on the beach.
2.Pool/Beach-Whoever designed this pool did a fantastic job. The large waterfalls drown out any noise from the pool bar, pool restaurant and noisy people. There is a great mix of shade and sun. The towel people will only give you 1 towel each and 1 pillow each. The pillow was great.. They always gave us 4 large towels in the room for 2 people, so we just brought extra towels down with us to the bool/beach to compensate for the 1 towel per person allotment at the pool. The beach is large enough to really spread out and not be on top of others. Chaise lounge chairs were free but the umbrella was $10. You rent them from the pool/towel hut. The umbrellas are a little on the small side. My husband had a hard time getting completely under it. There was always something sticking out. Out of the 6 days we were there the water was calm 2 days, and rough 4 days. By rough I mean you could not relax and carry on a conversation in the water. You had to be very alert or get wiped out by a wave. Eventually, I just when in up to my knees.
3.Food/restaurants- Do yourself a favor and bring a collapsible cooler. Go to Walgreens..buy alot of water and pop. Fill your cooler with ice (provided at the hotel ice machine) and enjoy your cheap drinks on the beach. We also bought beer at the grocery store accross the street ($7 for 6 cans) and had our own cheap happy hour. The first day of arrival my husband and I split a cheeseburger/fries and he had a beer. The bill from the beachside restaurant came to $25 including tip. So needless to say that was the last day we ate hotel/beach food. My husband took the walk accross the street to fast food heaven and bought us Burger King or Taco Bell for lunch. Everytime he came back through the lobby with our lunch food, a Manager advised him he would not be allowed to eat it at the pool. Since we were on the beach this was not an issue. Just very annoying. For dinner we avoided the extremely pricey restaurants at the hotel and opted for Lupis (just past the El San Juan). They had what might be the best steak fajitas I have ever had. ($13,I think) and $3 Medella beers. Also ate 1 night at Outback(at Embassy Suites). At first the prices seem comparable to home until you realize they do not include the salad, like at home. Good meal. Just costs more than home.
Hotel room- Got upgraded to an oceanview room. Slept every night with the door open to hear the waves. The room had a ceiling fan, so that kept us cool enough at night even with the door open. The room also had a lighted make-up mirror. The refrigerator is stocked with overpriced hotel beverages but, there is still alot of room to put your own beverages or leftover dinner.
Car rental-We rented an intermediate for $30 a day including tax from Dollar rent a car at the Holiday Inn(1 block from Intercontinental). They do close at 5pm so unless you want to pay $16 to park it at the Intercontinental make sure you get going in the morning so that you can return it by 5pm. We drove to El Yunque and were able to hike to the waterfall, stop for lunch and shop Belz outlet mall. The drive to El Yunque takes longer than you think it will. Lots of stop lights made it take 1 1/2 hours.
Hotel rate- I booked at Interline Travel.com. This website is for Airline employee discounted rates. We paid $208 per night for a lagoon view room. Their rates are a real deal when you realize the 22% taxes are included. I bought the AmbassadorClub membership ($150) from Intercontinental.com which gives you a one category room upgrade at check in. We would have been upgraded to Pool view but, since they didn't have any available ...we got upgraded to oceanview.
Casinos-The El San Juan casino was our favorite. A good amount of 1 cent machines. This casino does get crowded on Wednesday and Thursdays with locals. (They must have some promotion for them because they were allover the penny machines.) We did not like the Intercontinental casino, at all. Not enough penny machines. And the ones they did have wouldn't take your bills or vouchers. They just kept rejecting anything you tried to put in them. The Embassy Suites casino was very small.
Hope this helps you enjoy your stay as much as we did.
