Arriving by car from the south across Germany, we sought a hotel close to the departure point of the Puttgarden-Denmark ferry to allow us an early morning boarding. We found just the place in Hotel Wallburg in Neustadt, Holstein, some 35 miles from the Puttgarden ferry terminal. Situated in a quiet location above the bank of the harbor, the hotel occupies what at one time may have been the substantial home of a ship captain. It has been lovingly restored, upgraded, and turned into a very nice small hotel by its perfectionist owner couple. It offers a number of single and double rooms, all no-smoking, most of which look out onto the yacht harbor basin. We stayed in room # 6, with large windows, comfortable twin beds, a nice seating group, and a very modern bath room with stall shower. As one might expect, everything was spotlessly clean. Internet access is provided free of charge. As is typical for small, older hotels on the continent, there is no lift and no A/C. Parking is available on-site. A delight is the café/restaurant with outside terrace, on which to enjoy a delicious pastry and coffee while watching boats from small to square riggers in size coming or heading for the near harbor mouth. A limited light dinner menu is offered, but a short, pleasant stroll along the harbor walk will bring one to a choice of restaurants. Equally, the picturesque town center, market square, and shopping streets are just as easily reached on foot. Using the picturesque town and waterfront, as a backdrop, a popular long running TV series along the lines of Bay-watch is being filmed here. All in all, having booked sight unseen from their INTERNET website, we were pleasantly surprised and pleased with what we found. If we return to this area, we will again stay at the Wall burg Hotel.
