This was a first holiday together for my wife and our 5 month old son. We generally prefer more exotic, far flung destinations but wanted something family orientated with a shorter flight time to see how our young son would cope with the journey and the 4 stars H10 Lanzarote Princess seemed to fit the bill even though I know a 4 star in Spain will vary greatly from one in say Phuket or the USA.
We booked through Cosmos and used our Tesco club card vouchers so the actual cost of just over £1000 was reduced to £75! Absolutely brilliant, if anyone needs an insight into how the Tesco club card vouchers work send me a message. Anyway I digress on to the meat of the review:
First impressions of the H10 Lanzarote Princess were good then bad. The reception area is elegant if a little dated with lots of marble but check in was smooth and thankfully we weren't pressured into having a porter take our bags up to the room. Unfortunately the room although cleaned had dirty towels left in the bath and a used ashtray left next to the TV. This was soon sorted by a quick call to reception and housekeeping arrived quickly with fresh towels.
The room (number 2076) is about 5 along from the lift and was clean but again a little dated. There was some noise from inconsiderate people walking by and you could hear the entertainment each night but realistically this is a family hotel so this isn't a complaint. The room featured aircon (a little noisy) plus twin beds, a cot, TV, safe and a very nice large balcony plus an ensuite bathroom including sink bath/shower and bidet. Annoyingly to use the safe was an extra €15 for the week and scandalously if you wanted a fridge/minibar this was €2.50 per day with a minimum €20 spend!
The pool area was great for families, it has secure (key card access) on the back gate and has 2 play areas. The pool itself has 3 separate sections around a central "island"/pool bar. One section was heated but it wasn't really warm enough even though I was swimming in all 3 by the end of the week. Also as a leaning to Lanzarote's volcanic roots the pool has large black volcanic rocks as pool decoration which isn't ideal for youngsters and annoyingly there is a daily charge for towels and cushions for the sun loungers.
We were on a half board basis and I must say the restaurant is excellent. Clean, friendly helpful staff and a great choice at both breakfast and dinner. Out of the 7 nights we never had any disappointing meals.
Location wise the H10 Princess beats it sister hotels (Rubicon Marina and Timanfaya Palace) hands down. They are a good 2KM walk from Playa Blanca centre but the Princess is only 200M from Playa Dorada beach and equidistant (10 minutes walk each way) from the new upscale Marina one end along to the fishing and ferry port at the other. The whole prom is clean well lit and lined with nice restaurants and shops; it really seemed much more classy than most of Spain's older tacky resorts.
To summarise I would definitely come again with my family. Although the whole hotel could probably do with a little TLC it does exactly what it says on the tin. This is a reasonably priced family orientated beach hotel in a great location that serves decent food and has great staff. We felt safe, the room was nice and the resort of Playa Blanca was lovely.
