This was our 6th time at Sun Park, tho the last time was 7 years ago and the place is still just as good and extremely good value for money. We went with mytravel on-line and you can opt out of the airport transfers for £20 discount each, which allowed us to hire a car for 5 people for the whole week for the same money! We didn't really use it much except to / from the airport but it was nice to have. We had apts 501 and 502 on the ground floor (overlooking the only heated pool) which were basic but clean and comfortable. A lot of Europeans are there on all-inclusive, tho we were self-catering. You can have a buffet breakfast for 6Eur (Adults) or 3Eur (Children). You can also upgrade at reception to all-inclusive for 26Eur (Adults) or 13Eur (Children) per day. We ate breakfast and lunch in the apt and went out to a different sea-front restaurant every evening. This cost approx 20Eur per person for 2 courses and drinks, so it's better value on all inclusive but we'd have gone stir crazy staying in all the time.
The German-run children’s animation called 1-2-Fly (enie, zwei, fly) operated everyday and played loud intrusive music at 10am everyday by the heated pool with regular further interruptions at 12pm and 3pm. We didn’t go to any of the evening entertainment, which didn’t seem very well attended.
The on-site supermarket has been shut for refurb since Sept 07 and showed no signs of opening but there’s a very good Netto about 100yrds south of the hotel. You can walk west into town along the main rd or via the coast path in 10mins else you can go to the new marina to the east along the coast path. A taxi back costs 5Eur.
The apt grounds and pool area are really lovely and well kept and there’s plenty of sun beds. It never gets too crowded by the pool. We went to Papagayo beaches on 2 days, which are a short drive (turn L out of hotel, then R and R again at roundabout along 5 mile dirt track). There’s a left turn just before the first beach and you’ll find a car park at the end on the top by the cafes: there are nice beaches on both sides. Playa Dorada is 200yds south of the hotel and nice but crowded.
All in all it’s a great place for the money: if you expect five stars then and go and pay £800 a day to stay in the Princess Yaisa down the road….incidentally it’s well worth a visit (some friends used the pool there everyday)!
