If you read ALL the reviews on trip advisor AND the hotel's own web site, then nothing should come as a shock about Sun Park. We stayed one week march 27th- april 3rd 08, my husband, two girls (8yrs and 6yrs) and myself. We stayed in a one bedroom apartment and opted for self-catering, having read the reviews!! The room we were allocated was 402- PERFECT! Very quiet and very cool. Everything you could want, but the bathroom was a little tired and could 've done with a lick of paint. 4 bath towels were provided, but were absolutely tiny. We used the pool area on the first day for about 10 mins- ABSO FREEZING! Didn't venture near any of the pools or any of the amenities atall for the rest of the stay. That shouldn't sound negative as it was exactly what we wanted- a clean, quiet and incredibly cheap place to sleep and shower. Yes the place is full of Germans who keep themselves to themselves and are quiet and early to bed- would far rather that than a bunch of British lager louts. We would return each night at about 11pm and the whole complex was in darkness and silence!!
Every morning, we'd have a cup of coffee in bed and then walk down to Marina Rubicon (approx 20mins) along the coastal path, where we'd enjoy a massive breakfast at Lani's snack bar- full english or baguettes, hotdogs, pizzas, salads etc- huge portions and as ever with Spain, the staff so lovely with the children! That would set us up for the day and then we'd hit the beach (Playa Dorada), beautiful weather, cloudless skies, white sands and clear, safe, clean sea (albeit cold, but it was March)! We'd hire 2 sunbeds (5 euros) and stay for the entire day til about 6pm- BLISS!
Each evening we'd walk down to the restaurants and shops. Now, I'd taken loads of smart evening wear and high strappy sandals, but the walk was a good 20-30mins, we'd hired a car but my husband and I enjoy wine with our meal so didn't take the car in at night. I ended up buying trainers and wearing rolled -up jeans every night! It really didn't matter, but I could've saved on all that packing!
The restaurants are all fine, nothing fantastic, but cater for all, especially kids. We enjoyed Verdara on the seafront, also Lani's steak house on the marina. Avoid at all costs the stunning looking Casa Pedro, near the ferry port- honestly thought we were eatind dog food!!
This was our third trip to Lanzarote, last year we stayed in the 5 star Princess Yaiza, which was fab, but if you're looking for self-catering and love the beach rather than the pool, then I would recommend Sun Park.
We got back late last night and are contemplating 2 weeks next mar/april, such a treat after a long 6 months of cold winter to fly and stay cheaply to a beautiful climate, swim in the sea and eat out every night. Mind you, I've put half a stone on- let the diet commence before Majorca in July!
