“not a hotel its a self catering work in progress set up”

Iberostar La Bocayna

20 Jul 2008

Arrived at what we thought was a Hotel, put up in an apartment, all units are self catering, and some have the misfortune of having to stay in the bedroom part of a larger unit with internal door locked for the other guests, Bocayna Park is an aparthotel without any hotel facilities, male reception staff are very unhelpful and all leave by 9pm. if you want to call home you have to use reception phone so if they have left your stuck, no shop on site, nearest shop we had to find ourselves was 18 min walk away, get used to walking or paying for taxis, one bus stop 50 min walk away and hourly to arricefe, nice walk along coast which will take you 4 hours round trip calling at Rubicon centre half way round, no indoor bar, restaurant ok, no italian as advertised and drinks very expensive for a captive audience, 16 euros for cheapest wine, only drink machine broken for weeks, no gym, this place is in transition from Cay beach, although no beach within 1 hour of it, Bungalows are in another building across the main road, this place should be advertised as a base for those who want to drive, without any of the perks of a hotel, def not suitable for those who are not mobile, nothing in the place to keep you there, staff are totally disinterested and thomas cook rep the pits, expect return airport trip to be 5 hours as y our the last drop and first, we got stranded by staff and cost us 40 euros to airport, this place is the furthest point away from Playa Blanca and in middle of provate housing, one bar within 40 mins or pay taxis, the only bar on site is outside consists of 5 tables in middle of kids play area, windy and very noisy, drinks expensive, cheaper at

“Very Quiet”

Iberostar La Bocayna

5 Jul 2008

Location
Quiet and remote. About a 20+minute walk to the Marina, there is a small prescint near, that has a small playground area an irish bar and small shops.

The Marina and the 'main' Playa Blanca strip in a taxi is a couple of minutes and costs on average, about 3Euros each way.

Accomodation
We stayed in bungalow 32. Initally, we thought it was brilliant when we first arrived, a 'cute' self contained bungalow. On closer inspection there was a hole in the bathroom wall, patio doors could not open, windows did not close properly.

Every night our bungalow was raided by a cockroaches. Despite being fumigated numerously, they still came back.

Staff
Nice, polite and always willing to help.

The repairers "tried" to fix all the damages and 'mis-haps', but nothing was actually fixed - the problems still remained.

The cleaners we're very polite greeting us when they saw us and cleaned superbly!

Canaries
The canaries was a cheap get-away to visit a friend who lived locally to the bungalows. The weather was ok (we were wearing jeans and a light cardie some days), however, it is very windy - not good for those people who are prone to earaches/infections!!!!!

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — The balcony was superb and blocked off the wind - making a sun trap!
    • Disliked — Cockroaches - lots of stairs, not good for people with a disability or seniors.

“Nice hotel but...”

Nice hotel in the south of Lanzarotte, Very calm location outside the touristic centers. You need a car to visit the island.
Very nice and roomy bungalows with a superb terrace and view with jaccuzzi (if you select the bungalow de luxe).
Unfortunately, the restaurant was no good. Large buffets but with untasty and plain food. Not worth four stars, Interior very cold and unpleasant to have your breakfast or dinner. Terrace outside even worse.
Facilities for children but no child animation in the hotel.
All in all I would not recommend the hotel because of the restaurant.

“Recommend for a very QUIET stay”

This aparthotel was recommended by the travel agent when we asked for somewhere quiet – no screaming kids, no disco noise, no drunken revellers – and it was spot on in that regard. The complex is on the outskirts of Playa Blanca in an area that is being fast developed. There is a small commercial centre there but it was not really open. When they have this sorted it will be a really great area. There is building being done, but only small clusters of bungalows and villas, and while we were there no actual work took place!

You can cut down from the complex to the sea front and walk along a coastal promenade to the Rubicon Marina – it took us around 20 mins – its possible to hire bikes and whiz along this path, which is well lit and has several benches at scenic bits. The Marina is, like everything there, purpose built, and so a bit twee, but it is clean and safe and has nice bars and restaurants. Getting to Playa Blanca town took considerably longer – 1.5 hours walking, so a taxi at 3.50 Euros (reception will phone them for you) is a good idea.

La Bocayna Park was two separate resorts and has been merged, the reception, restaurant, pool bar and supermarket to the old “Cay Beach’ are all shut down so look a bit strange. There was talk of returning the site to two aparthotels, which may be a good idea as they struggle on the service side when it is full. The 'Italian a la Carte' mentioned in the brochure was also shut but they were swiftly refitting it as an Argentinian steak house so I imagine that will be open by next week.

You arrive at reception and have to take your own cases to your room (There are some trolleys available). There is a choice of steps or ramps running down the fairly steep site, both are tiled and neither have hand rails (which I imagine would be a big problem if it rained). It takes a while to get a feel for the layout and we felt as if we were in a giant Pac Man game for the first few days!

We were in apartment 1061, which was at the lower edge of the site. It was next to a main road but we need not have worried as the resort was quiet – this may be worse when things pick up there though. We were allocated a large twin apartment with a kitchenette (even though we did not ask for this). It was very clean and was kept that way by hard working maids. We had a full sized fridge (regular rooms have a mini fridge), and kept this supplied from the Netto around the corner. The reception staff were a bit snotty when I requested two more pillows – only one supplied per bed and no spares in the wardrobe. I imagine the most convenient rooms are those numbered 3100s, as they are next to the pool but close to the restaurant. All rooms have a nice terrace or balcony.

The pools were all freezing and I was overjoyed to see a Jacuzzi – that actually turned out to be a very over-chlorinated ‘cold tub’. Can’t understand why they don’t employ some solar or wind powered heating to make this a bit more comfortable, and also some broken tiles that could do with fixing before someone sues them. There are some cute cats and a couple of seagulls who hang around the lower pool.

Breakfast and evening meal at the restaurant could be taken inside or out in a sheltered courtyard. The salads and cold buffets were good but the hot food was very inconsistent. They have a Chinese and a Spanish chef who were in different nights and were trying to offer what they call ‘show cooking’ – hot food cooked to order that you have to queue for. In reality the chefs were also dealing with preparing lots of other stuff for the hot buffet so were run off their feet. It was the same in the morning as the person doing eggs and omelettes was also cooking churros, pancakes, sauté potatoes, bacon, sausage etc etc! It seemed that for the sake of employing someone to do the hot buffet bits the whole thing was a mess. However, there was lots of choice and when they got it right it was very tasty.

I would definitely recommend hiring a car for at least 3 days if you want to see the island. Even the most stressed out holidaymaker would get bored here unless you are happy to walk or taxi into town. Besides, Lanzarote is so beautiful you really need to see it. I got a good quote via the Autorisen web site – their desk is at the airport and since you can decline paying for transfer to the hotel these days you can automatically save around 30 quid towards your car hire and get there faster! We left it too late to do this but were lucky to make friends with a couple who kindly let us join in with their trips.

This was our first trip to the Canaries and we were very satisfied on the whole. Not an ‘amazing’ hotel but an informal, very quiet and reasonably priced place. They just need to sharpen up a bit in order to compete when the area becomes more developed.

stayed at the la bocayna with my wife and two small children aged 6&3 for 1 week room only in the last week of November, the bungalows are very spacious and are kept very clean as is the pool and hotel grounds , children's pool is not very big and the main pool was not that warm , staff are friendly and helpfully with any problems ie: could not find our booking on our arrival , for some reason it was booked under my first name not surname but they did all they could to resolve as quickly as possible , some of the locks on the patio doors and one of the bedroom windows were not working , having two young children sleeping in the bungalow it was not safe , we reported this to a member of staff and within 15 minutes the repair man was at our room, if you driving to the hotel from the airport the information on the web site is not that clear , at the end of LZ-2 you are in Playa Blanca at a roundabout you can only turn left or go the way you came, take the left turning you are now heading away from town ,stay on this road and after the 3RD ROUNDABOUT turn right then 1ST left the hotel is on your right. ENJOY
