The setting for this hotel is beautiful, with views over the picturesque Rutland Water. You can walk from the hotel, partly along the lakeside, on a path which takes you to all the water activities about 1.5 miles away. The name sounds grand but really Barnsdale Hall Hotel is a very casual place with people walking about in track suits, walking or gym gear. It is very family oriented so lots of family groups with children running all around. The hotel has lodges on the site which they rent out rather like a timeshare so lots of people treating it as a holiday home with leisure facilities.
The grand building which houses the reception has only a few rooms and it is unlikely when reserving a room you would be allocated to one of these unless you specifically requested.
Finding our room proved a little difficult, even with the map provided for us by reception; we were not in the main building but in one of the other 'hotel' buildings on the site, and it would have been helpful to have someone guide us and help with the luggage [we are not young things]. We eventually found our room only to discover that it was dark and dingy and looked out directly onto a yellow painted high wall about 3ft away from the window. After telephoning reception they agreed to change the room [for the same price] and allocated us a room on a higher floor with a lovely view of Rutland Water from the outside balcony. Another member of our party the following day had a similar problem with claustrophobia. These rooms are really not suitable and should be filled last when all the other rooms have been taken.
It was good to have an iron and ironing board in the room as well as the usual tea and coffee making facilities; the bed was very comfortable.
We had dressed up for our first night out at the 'Hall' but looked greatly out of place with most people in casual sports dress and wished we hadn't bothered. We were OK on the second night as several more friends were joining us for a surprise birthday celebration so our whole party dressed appropriately.
The staff at both evening meal and breakfast were superb and looked after us very well; nothing was too much trouble and this really made our weekend enjoyable. The food was surprisingly good and we enjoyed everything we ordered.
For a weekend of leisure activities this hotel is great, but don't bother dressing up unless you are with others who will be doing the same.
