Having read all the previous reviews on the Tonkovic Apartments we had never seen reviews with such consistently good comments without a negative thing being mentioned by anyone. This made us slightly suspicious as to whether they had been massaged in some way as it just seemed to good to be true, but based on these Trip Advisor reviews we went ahead anyway and booked up.
We have just returned from our holiday having stayed at the Tonkovic Apartments and I can assure you every word of the previous reviews is absolutely true, plus some. These are without doubt the nicest self catering apartments we have ever stayed in. From the moment you arrive your host and apartment owner Pavo will take good care of you and give you as much or as little help as you need. We hired a car at the airport and found our own way to the apartment so I guess we are more independent travelers, but if you are without car Pavo will help you in any way he can, whether that be taking you down the shops for food and supplies if you are going to be more apartment based, or collecting and returning you to the airport, he is always at hand. He’s a really nice guy and speaks excellent English. His mum and dad live at the apartments, so if he is not around they will help, though they don’t speak much English, but like their son are a nice couple.
Now to the apartments themselves. We stayed in number three, and as soon as we walked in it was quite clear how well Pavo looks after his properties. Everything was spotlessly clean and beautifully presented, and it was very roomy. You get all the appliances you need such a twin plate cooker, microwave, kettle and fridge. There is even a TV with Satellite receiver which receives BBC World News so you can keep up to date with whats happening. There was more than enough crockery and utensils for the two of us, so if you are cooking in, no problem. The apartments are also air conditioned, and there was no additional charge for this which we have sometimes found to be the case on our other holidays.
Having been impressed by the apartment itself, more was to come when we went out on to the terrace. The views over the bay are spectacular. We could easily have sat there all day, but we have more places to visit and see. As mentioned by some of the previous writers, this view comes at a price as it is a long bendy drive or walk to the top. As long as you are reasonably fit you should be okay, but just bear it in mind. As mentioned we had a car, and that was fine with the exception of the last bend were you may need to reverse back and forth a couple of times to get round, dependent on the size of your car, though we got used to it.
Once you get to the top there are a couple of parking spaces and a space in Pavo’s garage. Incidentally if you are collecting a car from the airport, the apartments really easy to find, you just take the signs from the airport to Dubrovnik (there is just the one road). The village before Mlini is called Soline, so as you leave Soline start looking for a big sign for the Astarea Hotel on the left. The turning for the road leading up to the apartments is almost directly opposite this sign, but before the Mlini road sign on the right. The turning in almost goes back on itself, so its very sharp. Zavrelje is the name the road/hamlet where the apartments are. Take a look at the following link to the Tonkovic website.
Coming back to the room, the bedding and towels were changed every day that we were there, so it was always lovely and clean when we returned at night. One other thing, the water was always hot, so you can take a shower anytime. We mention this as we have stayed at places, more especially in Greece where this has not been the case.
One thing to also mention is that we are a gay couple, and Croatia is a mainly Catholic county that generally has more conservative views on the matter, so we were a little concerned that it may be a little awkward when we arrived having booked a double room, but that was not the case as Pavo did not appear to have an issue with this and treated us like any other guests, so we can safely say this is a gay friendly place for any same sex couples considering booking their accommodation here.
All in all we just could not fault this place in any way, and would definitely come back, so book with confidence because you will not be disappointed. Fantastic accommodation, wonderful views and a lovely host. What more could you want.
If you are two couples book apartment 1 at the top. Its huge.
