We have just returned from a week away at the Barcelo Castillo Apartments (as a couple without the kids) on a half board basis. We have been to Fuerteventura before and stayed self catering at Club Las Velas, which was excellent (four years ago), but always fancied staying here... so this was a nice treat. We upgraded on arrival (as suggested by previous reviewers, at a cost, but for us this was well worth it) and we were very impressed with our wonderful first floor apartment which had a kitchen/dining and sitting room area with 2 ring cooker, fridge and all the equipment you would need to be self catering as well as a flat screen TV, the bedroom also had a TV, a safe and huge wardrobes! We were in a private "gated" complex with 2 seperate pools which were much quiter than the other pools on the main site (but suited us just fine). There was only ever a handful of people arond the pool and we would often take a walk into the town or bus to Porto del Rosario and we would still have about 20 sunbeds to choose from when we did decide to return! The free bus to the Atlantis shopping centre (ask reception for the timetable) was handy but we didn't think much to the shops (not very many, but the supermarket was cheaper than in the resort), the beaches behind the shopping centre are nice though and we often took the bus here to spend the day on the beach here as it was less crowded and because it has been man-made the sea fills what can only be described as very large pools which are ideal for the kids as there aren't the strong waves or currents like in the main resort. It's a nice walk around the coast if you enjoy walking (about 40 mins or so at a leisurely pace). If shopping is your thing then ask reception for a map and local bus times... for just over a Euro each you can catch the bus to Puerto del Rosario and visit the shopping centre there which is much bigger and the supermarket was even cheaper than at the Atlantis! The bus ride was pleasant on a nice airconditioned coach, and with buses every 30 mins you don't worry too much if you miss one. Only down side is you have to get yourself to the bus stop which is over the other side of the resort, but we caught the little train from the harbour for 1 Euro because we were feeling lazy!
Going back to the hotel itself, we were informed of building work before we arrived but it was all screened off from view and didn't affect us at all. We went half board because on our previous visit we found it very expensive to be self-catering and to be honest this hasn't changed if you only shop in the resort and don't head out to one of the bigger supermarkets you will pay considerably more (In Puerto del rosario we were only paying 1.2 Euros for a bottle of decent rose wine) the food at the Barcelo was average for a hotel of this size and we were very impressed that we were offered a cold buffet on our arrival at 10pm!
We love Fuerteventura and will return again I'm sure, just not with Thomas Cook Airlines who not only delayed us by 6 hours because of lack of cabin staff but crammed us into the aircraft like we were sardines (much better experiences with First Choice and Thomson)

“my favourite place in the world”

Barcelo Club El Castillo

We arrived back from a two week stay yesterday having stayed here last year and in 2003. We thought the first holiday was fantastic, the second even better but this year has got to go down as one of the best we've had anywhere. I just love this place! The food, the location, the pools, the entertainment team and of course, the weather.

My husband is wheelchair bound and finding a holiday location to suit our needs can be difficult. The layout of the complex and the location in relation to the town etc allows us to have as good a holiday as the next person. The staff are all very friendly and helpful and nothing is too much trouble. The entertainment team did everything with enthusiam and dedication and you felt that they really did care that you were having a good time. In particular, the Maxi Club staff did a fantastic job and its just a pity that if and when we return next year they may have moved on to other resorts as was the case with last year's team.

If you just want a totally chilled out holiday without all the sightseeing and culture (and that's not a negative thing in my opinion) with great entertainment, good food, fantastic weather and a safe and clean place for kids, at a price that won't break the bank, then this is the place for you

“amazing holiday!”

Just back from staying at this wonderful hotel for a week. Could not fault the hotel at all, the staff were wonderfully helpful and the apartments are amazing. I was stayin in the newly rennovated 1000s and i just couldnt get over how lovely it was. Some work is being done (on the 2000s i think) yet that didnt bother us at all no noise or anything. Some of the 1000s looked as though they had not yet been done up, but that may just be from the outside.... so i cant speak for all of the bungalows. The pools are all gorgeous, the one up at the 3000s seems to be quieter than the others though if anyone is looking for a quiet time!! yet i loved each of them the same! i loved the beach also, as the hotel is situated brilliantly right on the beach!!
we walked over to the dive centre and did the Oceanariam explorer one day and i would definitely reccommend it! its 20 euro for an adult and you get a ride in their submarine , shown a sea lion show and taught about the local fish (you can even touch the sting ray if you want!!) this was the only trip type thing we did but i would definitely reccommend!!!

i will definitely be going back!!!

We stayed at the Barcelo Club El Castillo the first week in January 2008. My husband and myself went there for a relaxing break we werent sure what the weather would be like. We found the weather brilliant, hot during the day sometimes quite overcast but be warned you still burn. The evenings were a lot cooler, take a cardigan or fleece. We came home with a great suntan and were only there for 1 week.
The hotel was lovely the rooms were clean and quite modern, they were like duplex apartments. The food we found was lovely always plenty of choice and carvery every evening, fish chicken pasta beef pork italian always salad, some sort of veg and potatoes.Breakfast, cooked , cereal, toast, crossants, fruit, yogurts, pancakes, and good old english if you like, tea coffee hot chocolate, milkshake for kids, fresh juice. The desserts in the evening were yummy too. The pool was clean and there was always entertainment. This hotel is right on the beach a lovely horseshoe bay shallow and crystal clear.
Visit the chipmonks just past the marina, take some nuts and sliced orange and they will eat out of your hand.
The sangria from the blues bar is a must !
Big tip dont walk to the centre from reception it takes forever, go to the centre by walking around the beach front it only takes minuites.
If you feel chilly at night you can hire a heater from reception.
We are coming back to the island again in April what a wonderful place.
