We have just returned from a week away at the Barcelo Castillo Apartments (as a couple without the kids) on a half board basis. We have been to Fuerteventura before and stayed self catering at Club Las Velas, which was excellent (four years ago), but always fancied staying here... so this was a nice treat. We upgraded on arrival (as suggested by previous reviewers, at a cost, but for us this was well worth it) and we were very impressed with our wonderful first floor apartment which had a kitchen/dining and sitting room area with 2 ring cooker, fridge and all the equipment you would need to be self catering as well as a flat screen TV, the bedroom also had a TV, a safe and huge wardrobes! We were in a private "gated" complex with 2 seperate pools which were much quiter than the other pools on the main site (but suited us just fine). There was only ever a handful of people arond the pool and we would often take a walk into the town or bus to Porto del Rosario and we would still have about 20 sunbeds to choose from when we did decide to return! The free bus to the Atlantis shopping centre (ask reception for the timetable) was handy but we didn't think much to the shops (not very many, but the supermarket was cheaper than in the resort), the beaches behind the shopping centre are nice though and we often took the bus here to spend the day on the beach here as it was less crowded and because it has been man-made the sea fills what can only be described as very large pools which are ideal for the kids as there aren't the strong waves or currents like in the main resort. It's a nice walk around the coast if you enjoy walking (about 40 mins or so at a leisurely pace). If shopping is your thing then ask reception for a map and local bus times... for just over a Euro each you can catch the bus to Puerto del Rosario and visit the shopping centre there which is much bigger and the supermarket was even cheaper than at the Atlantis! The bus ride was pleasant on a nice airconditioned coach, and with buses every 30 mins you don't worry too much if you miss one. Only down side is you have to get yourself to the bus stop which is over the other side of the resort, but we caught the little train from the harbour for 1 Euro because we were feeling lazy!
Going back to the hotel itself, we were informed of building work before we arrived but it was all screened off from view and didn't affect us at all. We went half board because on our previous visit we found it very expensive to be self-catering and to be honest this hasn't changed if you only shop in the resort and don't head out to one of the bigger supermarkets you will pay considerably more (In Puerto del rosario we were only paying 1.2 Euros for a bottle of decent rose wine) the food at the Barcelo was average for a hotel of this size and we were very impressed that we were offered a cold buffet on our arrival at 10pm!
We love Fuerteventura and will return again I'm sure, just not with Thomas Cook Airlines who not only delayed us by 6 hours because of lack of cabin staff but crammed us into the aircraft like we were sardines (much better experiences with First Choice and Thomson)
