A week in Fueteventura was just what was needed after the chaos that is Christmas. We had been looking forward to flying out on Boxing Day for a good few days.
Sadly, the bubble of enthusiasm burst on our arrival. Arriving late night we were glad of the opportunity to get checked in quick and were allocated room 329, up on the top floor at the back of the complex. With two kids aged 8 and 5, staff at the Caleta Garden thought we'd benefit from a quieter apartment. However, this apartment could only be described as pokey and grim. We filled it with ourselves and suitcases and then discovered there were two light fittings that didnt work, the shower was broken and there was mold and rust throughout the apartment.
The next morning we complained and were offered a move to one of the dreaded 'rooms without a view' but then after much persistence were offered room 166. We won't like it because of the noise from the bar said the receptionist but on inspection we discovered a much more spacious apartment and one that had less wrong with it so we gladly swapped even if it was going to be more noisy at night time. We'd asked to be overlooking the bar or pool when we booked so why we werent offered this room to begin with is beyond me.
Room 166 still wasnt perfect but was practical and gave us some space. However, there were still shelving and fixtures coming off the wall, rust and mold in the bathroom and the most uncomfortable beds I've ever laid on. The decor, like that throughout the place is suited to the inter-war years, i.e. dark green and cream giving a grim and gloomy appearance.
The swimming pool was totally freezing despite temperatures of 23-25 celcius each day each day and dawn till dusk sunshine. Half the pool is in the shade almost all day at this time of year, leaving only one side for sun bathers. This was soon acquired by those reserving beds at 9.00 am despite not appearing themselves until midday.
The food in the restaurant can at best be described as bland and mediocre and hygiene standards are a little concerning. Plates were placed back out for serving with food that the dishwasher had failed to remove and the final straw with food came five days in with the discovered of human head hair in the morning's scrambled egg. Yum!!!
The entertainment was tired and dated. If you like Play Your Cards Right and Bingo that you would say that Tony did a sterling job, however, even this was ruined by loudmouth English guest who could have been at home on Shameless. Chavleta Garden would be a more appropriate name.
Caleta de Fuste or Costa Caleta or El Castillo as the place is known is a good resort although I'd struggle to see anyone finding enough to do to fill a fortnight. We struggled with a week. Its very British you're not going to get any culture but the beach despite being man-made is good and the Oceanarium (look out for Submarine trip and Whale Watching) is worth a visit. Also worth a visit is the Barcelo Comfort El Castillo (a hotel that makes you wish you'd booked there instead of the Caleta Gardens), it is right at the end of the promanade (to the left) and entertainment is either in a large courtyard or hexagonal shaped building. Entertainment here is very good, with a good variety and sound entertainments team.
For eating out we have to go with majority and recommend Fado Rock and the Italian (La Bogxxxxx) can't remember how to spell it. The sixties bar and blues bars both looked busy but when we tried them it was nothing to shout about. Suitable for English people in an English focused resort wanting English food and a read of The Sun. Garlic Bread anyone? Thought not!!!
I saddened to write my first negative trip advisor review (this is number 10) but wherever I go next can't fail after this experience.
