When we booked our holiday we booked at a different hotel down the road, but the day before we were due to leave First Choice called us up and told us the hotel we booked was over sold so they had to offer us Viva Menorca instead. When I checked the differences online Viva Menorca was more expensive and rated better on Trip Advisor than the hotel we initially booked so I had no problems with this aspect.
In my opinion this hotel has some very good points, a couple of very small issues we encountered that may put others off this hotel but we made the best of and one big issue that concerned us. Lets start with the positives.
When we arrived the exterior and lobby of the hotel was very clean and modern and was a great first impression of the complex. The rooms, at first glance, seemed small however once we got used to it it did not seem that bad. The TV's only get 2 English channels and if you have young children and plan on being in the room early at night take a laptop or DVD player as you may get bored of the CBBC Channel after a few days.
There are 3 pools (or better put 2 and a half pools). 1 big pool that has plenty of room, 1 kids pool that is a decent size, has a few small slides for toddlers and a huge pirate boat at the edge with about 5 slides for the older kids. This was a cool feature. The half pool is a tiny indoor pool that I guess would get very busy if the weather was not very good. None of the pools were heated. This was not a problem for us as the weather was fantastic although if you go out of season may be too cold for younger children.
The food was a good quality (we were all inclusive so eat in the restaurant 3 times a day for a week). The choice changed every meal and included things like Paella, casseroles, pizza, grilled meats (cooked fresh to order) as well as salads, soups, breads, fruits and desserts. Breakfast was nice with fresh pancakes and omelets every day, although the bacon and sausages were not up to much, but other people may disagree. Over all I was happy with the food in the restaurant. And if you got hungry in between meals there is a bar and grill next to the main pool that does burgers, hotdogs, pizza, sandwiches etc all day, so that was a nice touch.
The location of the hotel was very good. The marina is a 5 minute walk away and the beach is just the other side of it. There are plenty of bars and restaurants in the marina and around the hotel. There is also a supermarket opposite the hotel that sells English papers and all the basics you might need. On a personal note none of the supermarkets are allowed to sell cigarettes in Menorca and the only place you can buy them is from restaurants and bars. There is a bar called Titanic Park 2 minutes away from the hotel that has a cigarette machine so you do not have to go far. Its just something to consider if you are a smoker. Next to the hotel is a bus stop that takes you to Cuitadela, the nearest big city. Its only 20 minutes away and cost under 2 euros pp each way so that's a nice day out.
All the staff were friendly and spoke very good English. And would answer any questions you had.
Now for the small issues.
The shower in the room spat sand out for the first minute. When we raised the issue with our rep he said they were aware of the issue and were dealing with it. To be fair this was sorted a few days later but some people may not have been so willing to put up with this.
The entertainment was OK. Every night was a kids disco that had a mixture of songs in English, Spanish and German. There were 3 kids entertainers on site that did everything from manning the kids club (more about that below), to organizing the activities and wearing the character costumes. Their English was OK although sometimes they seemed out of their depth since there was only three of them and about 20 kids all wanting their attention. It was the same routine every night but the kids enjoyed it so that's what counts.
After this was a tribute act or a visual show of some kinds. Some were good, others were not to our taste. But the bar was open until midnight so if you did not like the act you could hang in the bar and talk with other guests.
There was one big issue that meant we didn't put our kid in the kids club unless we were there with him. When my partner took our 2 year old son there one morning there was about 3 kids and one of the entertainment team doing some colouring and cutting. The problem was that as one kid ran outside the room into the play area the team member would go outside to keep and eye on them and leave shape scissors and a STANLY KNIFE on the table with the remaining 2 toddlers that were left in the room. This was defiantly not up to our standard. To be fair one team member would struggle to keep an eye on 3 young children that can run inside and out side so the hotel should of had more than 1 team member on duty in there but i would expect more common sense from some who works with children. This has not put us off going back to the hotel but has defiantly put us off ever leaving our child in any kids club without us being there as well. If you plan on leaving your child alone there then i would remember this story before doing it.
Apart from this issue our overall experience was very good. The hotel was very clean and the food and drink was more than acceptable. We would go back again although i feel there might well be better hotels for families in the local area so if we went back as a couple we would stay here again. But if we went back as a family we may look for another hotel in the local area.
