Been home a week and wishing i was back on the extra large sunbeds of Hotel 28.
The transfer is only 5-10 mins from the Airport and on arrival to Hotel 28 (22:00) we were greeted by the lovely Vicky and quickly shown to our room, 2nd floor with oversize balcony, room 304. Next morning up bright and early the sunrise and distant sea view were fantastic. The first impressions of the hotel and pool area exceeded our expectations and were the hub of our two week stay.
The rooms are all very nice and basic in design, clean linen and towels every day. Beds were very comfortable and aircon was superb. TV (never on) ipod doc and mini fridge were a great bonus. The shower was awesome and was always hot. Rooms with the pool view lose the sun from about 14;00 which was nice for having a few cool late afternoon drinks on. The hotel rooms on the back had a great view of the mountains.
Down to the breakfast area first morning we were greeted by Argiro who is the life and soul of Hotel 28, Her humour, advice on things to do on Santorini and general all round approch to all the guests was unreal. The breakfast area is very nice and can be taken inside and out, it is self service and has all the usual varied foods, cereals, yoguart, fruit, cold meats, eggs bacon, fresh baked bread and cakes. coffee and juice.
The pool and bar area are fantastic, no other properties overlook it and great views of the mountains. The sun beds were bliss and great for catching up on some sleep if too much Santorini wine and Mythos had been consumed, towels are also free to collect every morning!!!!!!!! Food at the bar was spot on along with the laid back friendly service and chilled out tune added to the peacefull ambience.
Beacuse of the quiet low key feel of the hotel all the other guests would give you a simple nod, good morning or make conversation with others. Majority of guests during our stay were English with a sprinkling of French and Dutch who we also found very friendly.
Away from Hotel 28 the beach front offers amazing restaraunts with very good food. These can be reached by heading down the road to the front of the hotel 5-10min walk. We mostly used the places at this (airport) end of the strip. Splash, Almira, SeaSide, Ya Mas. Other favorites included Just4Beer and Kiwi (Thai Chinese) and Liverbird for snacks.
Hotel 28's sister hotel right on the beach towards the mountain end of the strip is also very nice, same sunbeds as 28 around the pool, great little bar and plenty beds on the beach, great for a change if you want some time in the ocean. Advise you to buy some of the slip on rubber shoes because its quite rough and tricky getting in.
We done two of Thomsons organised trips. Evening cruise in the Caldera with a four course meal and wine was brilliant. Simply Santorini was Ok but after hireing a Quad and visiting many of the same place along with many others i would suggest that if its your thing. Oia Thira and Santos Winery were superb viewing points for the Caldera and sun sets. Ancient Thira is worth a visit along with Perissa over the other side. We walked up twice and it was a 4 mile round trip to the top from the hotel. The very obvious winding road is visible from the resort of Kamari.
After much searching way back in January i can hoestly say this one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in. Dont hesitate, get it booked and enjoy. We dont normally return to the same resort but if we do Hotel 28 will be the place.
